Been out visiting my daughter and her baby this evening and when we got back I went to check the aviary and found Titch, my FM on his back on the floor. I thought he was dead but he moved. I picked him up and he bit me hard so I know he still has fight left in him. His wing and tail feathers are shredded and he has some blood on one wing. I thought he had been attacked by one of the other buds but when I put him in the hospital cage he tried to perch but fell on his back where he was pulling at his wing feathers to get hold of something to pull himself up. He has blood on his beak too. So I think he shredded his own feathers in a desperate bid to right himself. He is now sleeping in a blanket next to me after having a drink and some millet.
I feel so bad that he could have been down there for hours and I was out. I just hope he recovers.

What a shame, I hope he gets better quickly, you can't stay in forever. Fingers and wings crossed.

Here he is. And his little blooded wing. He is sitting in the hospital cage and insisting n sitting on the perch. He's so unsteady he keeps falling off and landing on his back. I have the perch low and a towel on the floor but if he falls again he will exhaust himself. I think this will be a long night.

Thank you for all your messages. He's nestled down on the towel now and sleeping. He is so tiny he must have used all his energy trying to get up. Poor little baby. He's a real fighter though and already looks better than he was. I am so hoping he survives the night.

Take the perch away and see if he will then sit on the floor in the towel - probably too late now anyway. It may not work; sometimes it doesn't and they will hang off the bars of the cage rather than sit on the floor.
I hope he is doing better, SQ. Not nice seeing them struggle. At least he is eating; that is a good thing. Titch has been through a lot in his life; hopefully this is just another small hiccup for him.

Thank you for the help Hezz. When I first put him in the cage he tried to climb the sides but fell so I put a branch low down for him. Then he fell off that, So I laid a small branch on the floor, he seemed happy with that but then settled on the towel once I covered the cage. I had a little look just now and he was preening his poor little wings so it's looking good.

That is sounding positive, at least. They seem to feel more secure with a perch under their feet, even if it is on the floor. I had to do this for Spyro when he wasn't supposed to be perching at all. I would often find him with his good leg/foot on the perch, and the other on the floor. The towel must feel snug for him. An observation I made with Smudge, with her poop problems I was worried that her vent area might have been getting irritated with the sticking sometimes, but the days I put a bit of savlon on her skin (she has plucked the feathers from around her vent), these days seemed to have been not good days for her. Might be just coincidence, I know savlon is supposed to be safe, but it did make me wonder. Is Titch worrying his wing at all?

He doesn't seem to be, it was more between his wings at he top, where they bury their heads. I will keep an eye on it though just in case. The blood seems to be in the feather shafts more than on the outside, like he has bruised them with the pulling. Although he did have a spot on his beak. I will have a better look at him in the morning to see if there are any sore areas. I have some savlon and sudocreme which is also safe for animals. Thanks again for the help.
It's such a shame he has destroyed his tail. He had it for so long. When I first rescued him he would grow a tail and it would fall straight out again then it got better but would snap so easily so he only had half a tail. I was so proud of him when he grew it and it stayed and looked good. Now he has completely shredded it along with the long wing feathers, there is no tail at all. If only I had found him earlier I could have saved them.
