I am so upset this morning as I discovered that Murph's leg ring has cut into his ankle/leg. Poor little guy has had a lot to deal with lately what with his preen gland/feather cyst so had to cut the leg ring off him this morning. I am glad to say it was successful, he is now sulking but okay - you could actually see the relief in in little face bless him once it was removed but for some reason it just broke my heart and had a little quiet tear to myself this morning. I know you guys understand The offending article:

I hate those things, Sam. I don't have any (neither do the birds ) but would get them removed beforehand rather than wait and see. I know they are much more popular in UK by breeders, whether show or regular. Poor Murph; at least it is gone now.

What a shame, poor little Murph. I hate these things, when I took Ben & Max for their health check not long after I got them, I asked the vet to remove the ring from both of them, (I kept them though, in my feather box). I'm sure he will be fine samwiseg, he's got a good Mum to look after him, hugs to you both

Pippin has one and I asked the vet to take it off but he didn't want too, he said it was nice and loose and he was afraid of damaging his leg. I don't think he was confident enough to do it, so we still have a leg ring.

Awww poor Murph. He's okay now though samwiseg Roswell is the only one of my birds now that has one. Doesn't seem to be causing him problems.

suesbird, that happened in a sorts to us too. The vet asked and I didn't know whether to answer yes or no. When we went for the second check-up they didn't seem confident in removing it. It looks like a much thicker, all metal, band than samwiseg's Murph's ring. But is loose and easily moved if I want to, but I wouldn't try to take it off myself.

Ouch. Murph will be feeling footloose and fancy free now, so all is right with the world.

I know this one sam, tis how i ended up with Isla. Her skin was growing around a metal one. Once i had asked them to cut it off i knew i had to have her poor little mite. The only one of mine that still has one is Inca and its plastic and still quite loose but i intend to remove it anyway. What did you use to cut yours off.

He is not so little Susannah I think that was half the problem as he is rather a large bird and as he got older he in turn grew larger than expected and caused the ring to squeeze round his leg to the point of cutting into it He seems to be now thankfully stace in fact he is jumping round the cage this afternoon with gusto! Am so pleased as I did have to bathe the wound with saline and then put Savlon on. Luckily there was no puss so the wound was clean I know skysmum and remembered how awful it must have been for you to see something like that for little Isla, especially as it sounded like she had it worse than Murph but it was fate that you were to have her and who could have been a more perfect person to walk into that pet shop that day to rescue her And in answer to your question about what I used to cut the ring - my OH used to work for the NHS and has a special set of operation tools eg. scalpel, pinpoint tweezers etc and importantly in this case a pair of "Downs" scissors which cut through ANYTHING. Plus they are fine enough for me to have been able to get on the ring as there was no way I could get underneath it completely as it was too tight. But I do have to say I am thinking about investing in some of those ring cutters to get the remainder of the boys rings off as there is no way I want this happening again

Thank's sam, ive hesitated because i want to be sure whatever i use will be fine enough not to injure her leg but strong enough to cut it in one hit, may have to invest in some myself.

Have had a look at an old post Barrie did and there are a pair that A C Hughes online do that cut through the ring even if it has already gone into the leg
