As long as you don't have a budgie like Whiskers. He used to use his beak as a JCB and trawl it through the seeds to find the groats. What he didn't want ended up on the cage bottom. Huge amount of wasted seed.

I have dishes and Pippin loves to swish his tail around in them, seed everywhere.

I've got a huge sack made of a transparent yet dense enough fabric that covers the cage half way. Lets light pass thru it easily, you can see thru it easily as well, and both the huskand the feather problem ...also the vegetable chewings, are completly resolved. And it'so no danger to them, they can't unweave it. I'll post some pics after a cleanup... Will be interesting to see. Welcome by the way.

silo feeders....hmmm.....I got the wrong dishes I think, seed everywhere, fine for Mischief but they won't let her have it to herself, what was I thinking I've heard of people using some sort of thing at the bottom of the cages too to keep the seed husk and feathers contained but I wonder if it would work with mine youngsters!

I know I wouldn't bother; you still have something that needs a clean whether it be fabric, carpet, lino, timber floor etc. My timber floor is probably the easiest thing to clean of all.

I hate it when you get a seed stuck to the sole of your foot - I call it a princess and the pea moment

lol.. I hate all that type of thing.. like sand everywhere when at the beach err I've decided not to change the feeders (yet again) they just seem to go for the easiest and leave the ones fitted to the cage! So I'm not refilling them until the others are empty too and they'll just have to get used to me emptying them of husk more often!

Here is what I do for emptying hulls in the food dish I pore the seeds into a bowl than have another empty bowl about the same size I take them outside now this works best on a windy day you pore the seeds from one bowl to another and the wind carries the empty hulls away what the heavier seeds fall into the other bowl

But I get the (very good) idea anyway.

Just arrived back and this is the first thread I've read in ages.
Perhaps I am one of the very few people who prefer to use a vacuum cleaner to clean the bird-room floor, an indoor flight, cages and the husks from seed pots and bowls?
Having kept birds as a teenager one of the main things on my “Must have” list this time around was a decent cheap hoover. (My lungs aren't so young now!!)
I was lucky and picked up a new VAX cylinder vacuum cleaner a month or two before my aviary was first in use. I bought one in a sale (very cheep). It has a HEPA filter so reduces the dust in the air making cleaning a quick, clean task.
I always use the vacuum cleaner to whisk away the husks from the tops of seed bowls and I’m pretty sure it sucks up only the smallest amount of good seed. It takes a bit of getting use to but, once you have the knack it is so quick and efficient I would buy a replacement machine straight away if my present one broke (heaven forbid!!!!!!)
It’s a matter of practice (or should that be practise?) Either way it is a skill that can be quickly perfected. I can do it with a fair degree of success so anyone can.
