After last nights application and medicine poor coconut kept coughing, gurgling and head bopping, her tail was labouring too. I kept peeking in on her all night. This morning I went to get her to put her solution on and noticed she was still making gurgling noises and head bopping / yawning (to get air) so I couldn't do it I was so worried it would make things worse. I feel at a loss. I don't know how she can go on like this? I'm trying to hold things together as there are major things going on at home, heads all over the place and now worrying about coconut on top. She's currently eating and preening, tweeting etc but obviously struggling with breath. I don't know what to do.

Oh lemonade, I feel so sorry for your situation, if it were my little bird I think I would hold off with the medication until tomorrow and try and speak to the vet, I wish there was something more I could offer in the way of advice. I hope another member can maybe help in advising you what to do for the best. I also hope the the situation at home improves for you too, love and hugs to you and Coconut

Oh poor Coconut and you. Is there an emergency vet you can call? I don't know but would steam or a humidifier help in any way? I know thats not her issue but could it help?

I would get her back to a vet, lemonade. If you have noticed a change for the worse, then I am certain Coconut will not be feeling good at all. A steam sauna wouldn't hurt her at all, could it? It might give her some relief, in the meantime. I feel so sorry for you both; hope things pick up for you both, very soon.

I took Coconut to the vet today. I stopped putting that stuff on her the last 2 days as I thought it was blocking her airways more and as my vet said, it would probably be like someone who had been stuck under water struggling to breath, getting pulled out then a bucket of water thrown over their face! Not very nice or comfortable. He suggested an operation to enlarge her nostrils. Risky and the possibility she would die during it due to the anaesthetic, tube down her throat and current breathing difficulties. I don't want to make that decision just yet. He said she wasn't critical, but if I got her beak cleaned up regularly and sprayed her with water daily and done the steam water then we could just monitor her closely. But he thinks it might eventually come to operation stage Poor little petal doesn't deserve this.

Could it be a sinus infection? has she had antibiotics?

It's been ongoing since March now Marianne. She's had about 4 courses of antibiotics and also still on anti inflammatories. It seems to never properly clear up. They think she had small nostrils to begin then the infection made it worse then those lumps grew and blocked her nasal passages. He did clear her up a bit today and her nostrils look clearer for now. I sprayed her face and when I held her close I could feel breath on my face so that's good that air is getting out now.

So sorry that you & Coconut are having such a tough time. Talk of an operation is always scary & quite rightly, should not be entered into lightly. I hope you can find a way to manage this long-term.
