Thank you for all your comments and well wishes it is so appreciated! As usual I feel at a loss as I dont have 100% confidence in my vet to diagnose this as I feel she will just not run any test (blood or crop) and just give him baytril and send us on our way. Makes me feel so at a loss! So upon researching and talking with friends to which they suggested calling our local zoo to see if they will help but I am going to ring PDSA first this morning as they are nearer to us and see if they too can help. They do apparently treat budgies so phoning and asking for advice there cant hurt and even if it means I can get an appointment quicker and a chance for them to perform any real examination and tests then all well and good. Thanks for the idea skysmum about Pets at Home, that's what made me think of PDSA! He doesn't like being in his hospital cage AT ALL tho! He has been bouncing round it, chucking seed everywhere and generally examining every nook and cranny of the cage trying to find a way out. Doesn't make it look at all like a sick bird I think he is trying to mimic eating but not really actually eating but he is more importantly drinking. His poops are watery with not much solids hence the weight loss. Has lost 4 grams in weight and I have got pictures of all of when he is fluffed and his droppings to be able to show the vet(s). Will be ringing PDSA shortly. Wish me luck He is currently hanging upside down from the top of the cage *sigh*

Right - many phones calls and sighs of exasperation later I have managed to find an EXOTIC VET in Dover and have made an appointment for Tuesday 11am! They have exotic vets that will deal with budgerigars, avians all birds - more importantly they listened to what I had to say about Alfie's symptoms and my concerns and they understood completely. PDSA do treat budgies....if pushed :-P

Hezz when blueboy had a goitre, he looked a little like Alfie and his cere was still lovely and blue when he died. Okay. Thanks for that, Marianne. How quickly did that all come to be? Did Blueboy have the squeak? samwiseg ...... good luck with the vet. Take some consolation from the fact that his poops are not that bright green that comes with not eating at all. 4gms is do-able ..... after what I have seen the hens do. Take fresh dropping with you, in case he doesn't oblige and drop on on the way. It is appreciated by my vets. Fingers and feathers crossed for you and Alfie.

Agree with Hezz take fresh droppings with you. My vet always checks the droppings under the microscope for parasites and inspects their colour and whether they are formed properly. Blueboys illness was quite a long one, maybe 6 months or more. The first vet I took him to misdiagnosed as aspergilosis(spelling!) so we had to treat for that first by giving him medicine for ages. I then put iodine in the water but it did not help. By the time he had a decent vet look at him it was too late. He had the iodine injection which did help but he passed away two days later. I still kick myself at not having found a decent vet sooner and trusting the first one (always listen to your instincts). I never went back to her after that. Yes Blueboy did squeak. It started off just when he was doing something, like eating, or leaning down, preening, but in the end it was all the time, it was awful

Wishing you and Alfie the very best of luck. Let's hope the diagnosis is treatable. Thank goodness for tenacity Sam, which you seem to have a good deal of.

Hopefully this is not Alfie's problem. Has he been squeaking, samwiseg?

Yes he has Hezz but not all of the time - he only does it if he exerts himself when flying or preening in a hard to reach place. Obviously I am not letting him out in his present condition until his weight is up. I am really happy to report he has managed to drink the iodine water AND he was eating millet all day yesterday! So the result at the bottom of the cage this morning is really encouraging! His poops are now solid and not watery and a bit bigger so he must have kept his food down more. Fingers crossed for only onwards and upwards from here Once again many thanks for everyone's positive wishes! xx Tenacity OP? I am like a terrier with a bone
