Your cage could be the reason why Sky is acting as he is. Its very tall and narrow, lots of space below and above. He probably came from a small square cage in the pet shop and he is scanning the area below and above him for any dangers. Budgies prefer a cage that is lower and wider as they naturally jump, fly from side to side and not up and down. A Hagen Medium cage would probably have been better. Having said that i appreciate that you have just brought this cage and I'm sure in time he will get used to it, but it is something to bare in mind for the future Thank you very much, I now have a better understanding of how Skye is behaving. Hopefully he will get some sleep soon! Kind regards, Daniel.

I would also like to add that he did escape from his cage earlier when I was changing the water inside his bird bath. We had to trap him with a washing basket and my dad had to grab hold of him (he did it gently) and put him back in his cage. Ever since he has been a bit weary when we get near him now.

Your welcome. We all have moments like those when they escape , things like that will knock their confidence in you but with time and Patience you will get there in the end

I've had my billie a week and he will not step on my hand when he's out flying. He just knows he can fly off. But he will step on to a perch so I use that to put him back in the cage.

Hi, Daniel and Skye again! I was just wondering how long it takes until you can start to finger train him. I have started to put my hand inside the cage for a few minutes, 3 times a day. If I'm doing something wrong, please contact me and tell me what I should start doing with Skye.
Thanks, Daniel.

Interact with your bird as often as you can. Some people suggest leaving them to settle for a week or so before starting. I believe in starting straight off, probably because I get impatient to spend time with them, but I have not had a bird take weeks to settle ....... maybe that's why. Every times you walk past, stop and say hello, literally and figuratively, gently get your bird used to your hand coming and going in the cage. Of course if Skye is really stressed by your hand in the cage, then you will need to slow things down until he is more settled, but don't stop altogether.

Hi, I just wanted to say that pretty much all day he has been at the top of the cage doing the head movement! I know that it is stress but he wasn't doing it yesterday! Every time someone goes near him he backs off. I don't know if I've scared him somehow or if he's bored.

Have you been interacting with him?
Do you think that you could get him a friend? Perhaps one of the birds that he was with at the pet shop?

Have you tried just sitting near and reading or just talking, not right up at the cage? Just might get him used to your voice and he might find it soothing. No touching the cage so he doesn't feel threatened.

My budgie does exactly the same. He first started doing this twisty head thing about 5 months ago at night when the light were dimmed as I have lamps on, so I did wonder if it was shadows or something he was trying to see, however he sometimes does it in the day too. In fact he was doing it today, but he doesn't do it every day.

I'm glad to say that he is a lot calmer and has started to chirp! He lets me feed him millet from my hand and occasionally steps on my finger!

I would just like to ask if I should let my budgie outside his cage for about 15-20 minutes even though he in not finger trained?

Get some basic step up training in place first, then when you do let him out, do so in a small room, so you don't spend all your time walking back and forth when it is time to get him back into his cage, and continue with the step up training in this room. And never have him out at this stage when you need to be somewhere; make sure you leave yourself plenty of time because sometimes they can give you the run around when it comes time to be back in the cage, and if you get frustrated and stressed, Skye will pick up on this and become stressed as well and almost impossible to control.
