My budgie that I bought from the pet shop today has been frequently swinging his head round in a figure of 8.
Here is a video of him:

I think it's stress behaviour. Try covering the top and 3 sides so he has less to see. He may feel insecure and is looking for a way out to a safe place.

It shows for me OPLooks to me to be boredom, something perhaps it has picked up from the pet shop. How long was he at the pet store, and how old is he? Does he do this all the time, or just now and then? To see him up the bars and doing it looks like boredom tick. See if he settles down, perhaps give him plenty of stimulation, toys and perhaps play some budgie sounds to him. You can find hour long budgie chirping videos on YouTube. As starlingqueen also says (posted same time as me like a stress behaviour (all I could think of was like a nervous tick) lol

The video wasn't there the last time I looked at the page. It plays for me now. Budgies Retreat.

Are budgie sounds good for them in the background or is it more nasty as he can't actually see them ??

I don't see why not, lots of people say that they play the sounds to their birds. My birds have a radio on a timer from 0700-2200 every single day to give extra stimulation.

Awwww bless him I have no experience of what it could be, do you let him out of the cage at all so he can have a fly around? He might be feeling stressed in the cage, not sure. Either way I really hope he improves bless him!

Oops just seen you only got him today. I'd do like SQ suggested and cover the sides so he feels a bit more secure to see if it improves. Was he doing this at all in the pet shop...?

Maybe he's just trying to work out his home. My billie has mad half hours where he thinks he's an escape artist and runs up and down the side of the tray. And bobs his head a bit.

As the bird can return his head to its correct position, I don't think it is stargazing, but agree with the stress suggestion. Poor little soul.

I also think it's stress. I thought of stargazing too but as Hezz says, he returns the head to a normal position. Have you thought of getting him a friend? He may have been with other budgies for a long time before you bought him and be looking for them.

Thanks for the tips!
