Hellooo I'm new here! I've had Coco and pop since June. I rehomed them. They keep very clean and are very well looked after and have run of our lounge from 4.30 - 11 pm when they go to bed long story short I have had a skin irritation for last two weeks doctors say nothing is wrong tonight! The birds were very itchy so I googled about mites and checked there cage low and behold hidden in the depths of some sisal rope were what looked like Hundreds of mites and the more I looked the more I found I clean their cage very well so I have no idea how I missed them. I guess I didnt know what to look for. I have removed everything from the cage and boiled everything in my shower Inc cage even pulled it apart (don't have a bath) all toys went in bin apart from solid plastic swing which I soaked In boilling water. I then proceeded to pull my lounge apart binning any fabric neear the cage abd boil washing blankets and pillows. Why has this happened!!! How do I make them go away my birds are very unhappy tonight there in the kitchen in a very bare cage they look as though they know something bad had happened. My other dilemma is the birds shared my lounge with my 4 degus and often came into contact as the birds would sit on there cage and pull their hair when the degus backs were turned lol. If my birds have mites and clearly me and my husband do my degus must have aswell.... Help!! I feel awful
Also I visited my gp today about my skin rash (due to mites I presume) and she told me there was nothing wrong... I'm covered in what's like a nettel rash and very dry and scaly my husband is similar

It's called scabies in humans.
But I know for sure dog scabies is not catchy to humans. I know the same about budgie mites. Same thingy.
But maybe you've got goats? Cause you know, goat scabies is catchy to humans, and it's the most itchy kind of scabies, one feels like scratching even the white of the eye. LOL I always stood at safe distance from any goat.
But sounds like a lot of what's happening there you're just imagining. Treat the budgies with some ivermectin drops, one drop on the back of the neck each. Disinfect the cages with f10 or other disinfectant, mites are not too stubborn. No need for all that work.
I doubt your skin rash has anything to do with the budgies.

Now... if you're talking about lice that's another story.
It's quite easy to get rid of them as well though. Very effective shampoos and sprays at pharmacies in our days. Just make sure you act fast before they get into mattresses cause than you have to burn them. Anyway... Why the panic?... it's not like you've got plague playing around.

Could you try taking an antihistamine? Yours could be an allergy.
For the mites, the birds need some ivermectin 0.1%, one dot on the back of the neck for 3 weeks.
You can probably get a similar product for the Degus.

Again, we are thinking along the same lines, Marianne Marlow. Allergy was the first thing that I thought of, as well. How can the GP tell you nothing is wrong if you both have a rash? ??

I am allergic to my birds and if I do not take an antihistamine every single day I would scratch my own skin off! Of course in this instance it could be the hay, dust, the Degus or anything else I have not though of that the person is allergic to.

I've been taking antihistamine but they only work for a few hours. Is there anything else I should be doing to stop these things taking over my house? Although the birds have been treated with a spot on there very very itchy how long untill their itch calms down I bought sprays for the house today too carpets curtains and that

The birds need to be treated with one drop once a week for 3 weeks - treating them only once will not kill off all the mites, if that is what they have.
What sort of sprays have you gotten for the house? Most household sprays are extremely bad for budgies.

I haven't been using the spray around the budgies only in my bedroom and bathroom as there is carpet in there the budgies are at the other end of the house well away from the spray. I know about the risks of the house hold sprays. I've Been given ivermectin for the budgies 3 drops once every two weeks.... This was the advice from the avarian specialist at my vets. The degus are having a whole pipet once every two weeks. Any tips for getting them gone quicker are welcome

I went through the 'budgie with mites' problem - maybe my experience and advice I was given might help - I treated Teddy and he was free from them after about 4 weeks and they have not returned :-D Begone Bloodsuckers

It's neither of those. I wouldn't trust over the counter stuff, it was prescribed by a vet so presuming it's the right stuff... I'll attach a photo when I'm home. Defo finding less mites. Now so hopefully it's doing its job

I feel bad that I didn't do any research when I got them like I did my degus, but being indoor birds I never thought they could catch anything. And the breeder never warned me or advised me about any preventative treatment! I'm just glad I know now and how to prevent it happening again!
