Funny, but my birds are all over my cage. I put in two layers of perches, One set high up and the other about half-way down and they are all over both lots. Sparky in particular uses them in a zigzag fashion - top to bottom across, bottom to bottom across, bottom to top across, top to top across, and then starts all over again. So I am really happy with the way it works for my lot. So angie, I would say just make sure the cage you get isn't one of the really tall, skinny ones. They don't give the bird enough room to get height. They fly like a plane not a helicopter, if that makes sense.

I have already sent for the large single height hagen vision cage and stand, the only thing i have noticed on the picture of it as it has a grill across the bottom to let the seed shells and other debris fall through is this not awkward for the budgie to walk on? the cage i have is a rather tall fancy brass wired and plastic base one and although he seems quite happy walking on the flat surface at the botton he doesn't seem to like flying up hence me getting a new wider cage, but atill not sure if i have done the right thing because of the grill at the bottom

I took mine out. Good choice ;D ETA: Don't forget to get some nice wooden/rope perches. As with most cages, it comes with nasty plastic ones.

Natural perches from a handy tree are the best perches for your budgie, angie. Try to get differing sizes (thickness) so their feet are given plenty of exercise. Just make sure you use a budgie safe tree. There are plenty of lists all over the internet on which trees are safe, but I know Barrie swears by willow (even grows his own) and apple is another very popular with UK budgies......are you in UK? Any fallen bits of eucalypts are swooped on by yours truly, scavenging for new perches - the branches also give the bird something to chew on as well, as they love pulling the bark off. Also if you don't like your budgie walking on the grill - they won't mind, believe me - and what makes things easier to clean, is to put a sheet or two of newspaper over the grill to catch seed husks, poop, etc. It is easy to take up and replace clean every day and makes the weekly "housework" a lot easier, as there is no poop stuck to the grill for a week and set like concrete. Also if you have enough height to go for two levels of perches, just remember to position the lower ones so they aren't directly underneath the top ones, otherwise you end up with a perch full of poop.

This is Puck's cage, I'd like to get him a bigger one but we dont really have room at the moment, he's out most of the time anyway This is exactly the same cage I have for Banana - he is also out most of the time - he just pops back in and out all day for snacks, drinks and sleeps
The X shapper rattle by the bottom right perch used to have bells on it but they've gone as they were driving me crazy. I dont mind them normally but when banging against the side of the cage its too much. Banana has a mirror with a bell on the bottom - I have trained him to sit ringing it all through Match of the Day The hanging dried grasses are new and proving a big hit, not sure he's actually managed to eat any of the seeds yet though Banana was terrified when I got him what was billed as a Budgie Pub from Zooplus, with dried grasses and seed treats. He wouldn't go back in his cage voluntarily for almost a week so I had to remove it He stopped using his iodine block, I think maybe cause he'd rounded all the edges so couldnt get a purchase on it. I cut some back into it so will see. Banana is in love with his iodine block but fortunately didn't notice when I replaced it with a new one ;D
I have added some cotton perches of different sizes to the top of his cage just for a bit of extra interest. He loves them. We're planning on getting another budgie in the spring and I would not hesitate to buy another cage like this. Thanks for sharing your pictures, I will try to add some of Banana's cage when the light is better.

Speaking of new cages - I also spotted this one on Amazon and wondered if anyone had any thoughts, positive or negative?
www.amazon.co.uk/BIRD-CAGE-COCKATIEL-CONURE-PARAKEET/dp/B002I67KHA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_npd?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1H051YFKRZSNF&colid=9U350LBFU2KI
The base grill bothered me (ugh), but after reading on this thread that I can simply cover it with newspaper it's looking more attractive again. I'm especially liking this top-opening thingy - and the price is great too!PS I had been neglecting the old forum and only discovered this new one today I'm Claire from Blackpool and Banana is my 3 year old male lutino with cinnamon markings. He is very tame with an unfortunate foot fetish

No Matt, he never goes on the floor of his cage, never has done (and only very occasionally falls off his perch ;D) but he also loves roaming around on the carpet. There are loads of little kids' toys everywhere in the living room and he loves playing with them! We have some toy microphones which it is very amusing to see him singing into - they do amplify slightly too, so his "voice" changes. And we also have some plastic balls with faces on which he goes mad for, except he always pushes them into a corner or under the furniture, so they're usually lost.
They are all such characters.

Hi Claire, I couldn't find any dimensions on that link you put up, but they are advertising it as big enough for a cockatiel, it should be okay. Okay, boy-look, now I have had a girl-look and seen the dimensions, it is quite small. Mostly we all go for "bigger is better", and buy the biggest cage you can afford and have room for. Because before you know it, one budgie will be two, and then three or four, and then............. It happens to most of us!

Thanks for the reply Hezz - it definitely is more of a square cage than the rectangular one I have for Banana and high rather than long. Perhaps not ideal long term. However I'm looking for a decent but bargainous one as it may only be used for a couple of weeks while the new budgie is in "quarantine". We also operate a doors always open policy, so no fear of little wings being cramped
