Yet another problem, Missy has a feather cyst on her wing. I have to admit that we have excised this cyst twice now over a period of weeks and it has come back yet again. I took her to the avian vet in Dover yesterday and saw the bird expert. He was very nice and very helpful (Missy did however bite him - I had warned him!!!) Anyway the long and short of it is, her cyst at the moment is not large enough to laser. It has to get bigger but not too big. It would mean an anaesthetic of course which I am not really happy about. So at the moment it is a case of 'watch and wait'. Jeremy (the vet) said that he has a canary come in 4 or 5 times a year with a cyst in a different place each time, the anaesthetise it, remove the pus, laser it and then the owners collect it and take it home. A morning procedure where the owners nip over the road for a coffee while they wait!! Strong little canary!! A bonus for me - Jeremy didn't charge me for this consultation - which was about 20 minutes. What a nice man! This is a picture of it when it first appeared, the one she has now is not quite so large.

Sounds like Mr Jeremy Vet is a lovely man, lots of reassuring info there, and no damage to your wallet, yet. He is a keeper, for sure. With Missy being otherwise fit and healthy, the anaesthetic shouldn't be an issue for her, and hopefully that will be the end of that.

Poor little Missy. Lucky you found Dr. Jeremy. A good avian vet is a real treasure.

Wow what a nice guy! Lets hope that things work out for you and Missy - you have had far too much stress and trouble with birdies lately xx

I don't think it can be sore as such ffiscool, it doesn't seem to bother her at all. But, I could be wrong of course.

What causes them? Do they remove the pus with a needle?

I think it's usually caused by an ingrown feather, just like when we get an ingrown hair?

That is exactly how they are caused, except the damage follicle needs to be...well..cauterised so that it doesn't come back

I have been watching and waiting on Missy's feather cyst and the time has come for the visit to the vet, tomorrow morning in fact. It doesn't look any bigger to me, but it's been two weeks and it now looks to me like it is leaking a very tiny little bit. The following picture is after her misting (as you can tell, she can't get enough)a before and after picture, as they both show up the cyst quite well. What a wreck!! Now all clean and dry:
