I don't even know how to start this and even if i could, im in bits . My beautiful Inca passed away in the early hours of this morning and i don't even know why. She was fine yesterday, enjoying the sun and bathing with the others. Ive thought for a couple of days that she had put on weight and around tea time she was restless almost as if she was looking for a place to lay an egg, she had a bit of a bulge around her vent but when i examined her late last night there there was nothing there to feel. I put her in a hospital cage and kept her warm and sat with her most of the night. She passed away in my hands in the early hours There are some things you understand and some things that just don't make sense and this is one that makes no sense to me at all and i will drive myself mad looking for reasons why. All the buds are calling for her this morning and little George has searched the whole conservatory, its so sad to see RIP Beautiful girl, fly high with all your family and friends that have gone before xxxx .

I am SO sorry. Inca would have been comforted by being with you It sounds as though she didn't suffer though and whatever it was, was short lived. That is something. RIP beautiful girl

Thank you for your kind words everyone. Ive spent the day going over and over things, as you do when one dies suddenly like that. The only thing out of the ordinary with her when i examined her after she passed was a very full crop. She has been eating grit and iodine like it was going out of fashion so im wondering about an impacted crop, plus George had been feeding her constantly . She wasn't being sick or had any bad smell at all. Just can't put my finger on it

My Snowy died suddenly when I was in hospital, no warning at all. We still have no idea why. Sometimes you just have no idea. They're so good at hiding things.
She had a good life with you x

Ive just settled the others early tonight and turned the lights low, little George has exhausted himself looking for her today, im sure he will settle in a couple of days.

This is awful news - what a shock - I'm so, so sorry, sky'smum. It doesn't seem a long time since beautiful and stately Inca joined your flock. She will leave a big gap. And, as you say, not knowing why makes it all the harder. As others have said at least you were able to provide company and comfort, but still so hard to lose her so fast. Hugs and tears. x

She came to me three years ago this month so she was around three and a half, far too young to leave us

Ive just settled the others early tonight and turned the lights low, little George has exhausted himself looking for her today, im sure he will settle in a couple of days. When a bird dies, in the end all you can do is look after the remaining birds and focus on them. George will get over it eventually. Hector called for Abbie for quite a few days after she passed too. Then he became more focused on humans and comes to us quite a lot. Before this, he didn't bother with us at all and wasn't a tame bird.
