Oh quick question, How long should I wait before picking up the babies to clean out the nesting box? Still only one today but I'm expecting the second one tomorrow.

I dont know much about it but maybe you should hold off on cleaning it, I looked it up on the internet and a breeder said that you can handle them after 10 days when they start to get fuzzy, but only sparsely, very few minutes at a time. Increasing the time after they are naturally weaned from the mother. They said to wash your hands with mild soap, then let the water run over them a bit until the scent of soap is not strong or goes away... But this is just what I looked up and someone else who is personally knowledgeable should be able to tell you more info. Also maybe you should wait until all eggs have hatched and they are all fuzzy. The mother should kick out the egg if it is far past it's due date...I dont think you should handle the eggs if possible...but I am not a breeder so...again...someone else can tell you for sure.

Yeah I've read that all too, thanks for the advice though! I supose I'll continue to be paitent until I have to clean the box. They're just so cute I wanna hold them so bad & yes "they".. as in more than one The second one is here! I think Theo is starting to trust me or he's just being the best father and standing guard ( I'm sure its the ladder ). Baby 2 must have arrived within the night or very early this morning. The little chirps are just melting my heart!

I havent been able to find the right timing to witness one of them hatch myself so that's a little small bumber, but they're wonderfulness makes up for it! There are 4 left, 2 of which are fertile 5 babies, is that alittle unusual or more than average?

I really couldn't say, I have no knowledge of that, as I am a new budgie owner myself...someone else might be able to answer that though.. But I have heard they can lay up to 8 eggs, it must be hard on the mother to keep them all alive and well with so many! But I think that is unusual for all to be fertilized, which is a bit of a relief because it seems very taxing on the mother's little body to sustain them. 5 babies would be wonderful, I hope that they all hatch and are healthy. You are very lucky to witness them growing everyday .

"Don't count your chickens before they are hatched" was coined for a very good reason. So far you have three chicks, and you might possibly end up with five; that remains to be seen, but no, that is not an above-average number.
