No 2 has it's eyes open.
I saw poop in the nestbox, I think from the oldest chick. So today it got a good clean out and new shavings put in. Shirley and John sat on the swing, they were really good about me handling the babies. The babies themselves are really warm, I was amazed. The second eldest looks a bluey colour, maybe like John.
The egg is still an egg.....I'm pretty sure it's not going to hatch now. Even with the warmth of the other 4 chicks.

In a few weeks they'll all be unrecognisable, isn't it amazing how fast they grow.

Indeed yes, even from one day to the next their rate of growth is rapid.
Shirley and John are being great, when I check on the chick they all have full crops.
I'm going to look for splayed legs tomorrow. They are always in the concave section so hopefully all will be ok.
With regards to food getting stuck under their beaks - does this happen with regurgitated food from the parents, or is it when they go on solids and feed themselves? Do I need to be checking this now?

More from being fed by us with a spoon or syringe; Shirley will be putting the food right down into their throats, not just at their beaks which is when the stuck food happens. It doesn't hurt to check, though. Also check to make sure none have poop on their feet or under their claws. This can cake up and make their feet/ claws grow oddly.

Oh thanks, I understand now. I imagine it's hard to check their beaks unless they have them open and are sqwarking.
Will check claws and legs in the morning then and try to get some pics if Shirley allows me.

I sm so envious clt80. I would love to have a mating couple, but I don't think I could cope with the responsibility of it all! I think you are incredible!!

I sm so envious clt80. I would love to have a mating couple, but I don't think I could cope with the responsibility of it all! I think you are incredible!! Me too! It's years & years & years since I bred budgies ... I still remember the excitement of the day the first chick miraculously appeared in the aviary! This was just before they started making nesting boxes with a glass panel at the back, so I hadn't been able to really look inside at all (unless I wanted the whole family to fall out!).

Well it is all lovely, but it's not something I really wanted as in I didn't want to breed. I just wanted to give unwanted birds a forever home. But, it happened and I'd never discard eggs so here we are. They are so cute, and it's heartwarming for sure (as long as nothing goes wrong). Shirley and John are the incredible ones, they really are.
I've some pics to upload from this morning.
Baby 1 is looking yellow, 2 and 3 look blue and 4 is still bald...with a bit of feather sheath coming through.
I've also taken a picture of the egg with a torch under it. Please tell me what you think, to my untrained eye it looks like yolk and no baby.
Legs are all clean and don't look splayed. Will keep checking. When you handle them sometime their leg(s) do go to the side a bit, but they can't hold their heads properly so maybe this is why as they are led forward. Will keep a check daily on it.

Thanks, I've not really done anything though :-)
Am worrying about splayed legs a bit. Think I need to watch some videos online as to what is normal with their legs and what is not.

They are all adorable . The egg doesn't look any good clt80, i think its safe to part company with it now. The chicks look very healthy and as long as you have plenty of bedding and they have each other to hang onto you shouldn't have a problem with their legs. I always said, as long as you provide the right things for them the buds pretty much just get on with it, amazing isn't it

The photos are a bit upside down and at angles, I was trying to concentrate on them rather than taking a pic. But I wanted to share the beauty of all this with you all. I've had a terrible year concerning the budgies and illness and death, and it's nice to be able to show you all something that is happy. They all scrambled towards the heater bless them, natural instinct to find warmth.
Thanks skysmum, on the last pic you can see a blob of something at the bottom to the left. It looked like yolk, and when I turned the egg it moved around the inside of the shell. I don't think anything is in there, or if it has it's not alive. I've read about infection with dead in shell chicks, but part of my feels i may be killing something I don't know isn't there for 100% not sure that makes but it doesn't in my heat. I may put it in some cotton wool in a tub near the radiator. Silly, but will make me feel better.
