The rule of thumb in candling eggs is if you see clear, distinct veins the chick is probably alive. If you do not see clear, distinct veins, the chick is probably not alive. Based on the pictures, if that egg was at my house, I'd be sending it on its way.
Thanks for the chick pics!

It's out the nest box now, in a tub near the radiator. Just for my piece of mind and because I am soft when it comes to any animal,
I just see a blob at the bottom of the egg. I don't think a baby ever started ....... at least I hope not. I'd hate to think of a dead chick in there.

Can a hen lay fertile and infertile eggs whilst she is breeding? Is that possible? Has Shirley laid four fertile eggs and one infertile one?

Can a hen lay fertile and infertile eggs whilst she is breeding? Is that possible? Has Shirley laid four fertile eggs and one infertile one? Yes it is possible. I know how you feel because i'm the same, even though i know i catch any Meep eggs very soon after laying i still feel the need the candle them just to be sure, i cant stand the feeling that i could be throwing a baby in the bin . As GG said there are no veins showing at all, its quite usual to get some that don't come to anything. My last clutch of baby buds, 5 eggs were laid but only three hatched.

Thank you both :-)
At least my mind is at rest. But yes you're right, I would be thinking did I throw a baby away!
When Agatha and Ralph had the chick that died the day after it was born, the other two eggs never hatched. I couldn't bring myself to throw them in the bin. I didn't know if they were infertile or DIS. I buried them with the baby in my garden.

The egg is no good .... just had to add my, very late, two cents worth ..... Looks like chick number two has yellow on the wings as well. I am glad these chicks have brought some happiness to your budgie days, clt80. Hope the rest all goes as smoothly.

It's a pleasure sharing this experience with you all. I cleaned the nest box this morning and I've taken some pics. OH said the oldest could get around as he/she is huge! I laughed as I told him it'll be another 3 weeks before said chick will fledge. Chick 1 - 17 days old Chick 2 - 13 days old Chick 3 - 14 days old Chick 4 - 9 days old

They are cute. They have their own little smell, a nice smell.
I'm.not sure Marianne, I didn't think their would be a lutino because of the colours Shirley and John are. I have no idea about how it all works, but I was thinking the eldest would be yellow and green like Shirley. The 2nd and 3rd have a blue undertone so I thought they'd be like John. As for poor little baldy 4 we've yet to see.
The difference between them all is staggering though, as in their sizes. Chick 2 and 3 were hatched on consecutive days yet the feather grow is noticeably different.

I am sitting here grinning from ear to ear! They are wonderful! Some lovely yellow colours coming through now. Me to Shirls. As I cleaned the nest I put them in a Tupperware box lined with soft kitchen towels and hubby held the box, he was all nervous saying they are trying to escape out!! As I was taking a picture one of them decided I was worthy of having their droppings on my hand!

Budgies are never too young to do droppings on us The little yellow one looks like he/she has red eyes. Are they red? it might just be the photo. I guess you don't know what Shirley and Johns parents or grandparents looked like

Actually I do think the eyes are red now you mention it. Oh how lovely - we may have a baby lutino!
