Hello, and I'm sorry in advance for the long message. I'm new here and unsure how to go about this. There's a large dark spot in the middle to lower part of my budgie's beak. It's been there for a few days now and I'm a bit worried. The surface of his beak is smooth, and he still eats, plays and flies normally. By now, there seems to be forming a small brighter area in the middle of the dark spot. There are also several dark spots on his nails. While all this already seemed strange to me before, the symptom that made me start worrying the most is his swollen chest area. His chest almost feels like there is some sort of bump. The budgie is 8 years old and has a partner. I have been trying to get him to eat fruit for a long time, but he refuses to even touch it (I’ve eaten it in front of him and covered it in seed to get him used to it). He does get a vitamin powder though. I already have an appointment at the vet on Monday, but I’m wondering if I should go tomorrow in case it’s something serious. Thank you all in advance for your help! Diabin EDIT: Here are a few photos of his beak and nails.

First thing that comes to mind is that your bird may have a compromised liver, usually fatty liver disease, not uncommon in older budgies. The dark marks on beak and claws can be from this, the swollen chest possibly from the liver becoming enlarged due to its ill-health and possibly accumulated toxins. If this is the case, this has most likely been building for some considerable time and another few days isn't going to make much difference. Of course, if you do notice him obviously starting to struggle, health-wise, then get him to the vet as soon as you can.

Thank you for your reply I figured that that was the case, since I didn't manage to get him used to a new diet successfully. We do have an appointment at the vet on Monday, though I'm not sure what she is going to say. He seemed to be in perfect health during the last appointment a month ago and now I'm just really worried how I can prevent his liver from getting any worse (if that is even possible). I would be grateful if anyone could tell me how to do this, it's horrible to know that I obviously haven't cared for him properly. Sorry for the lengthy reply, I'm just worried what this means for him.

You need to discuss all that with your vet. They will probably have a regime that they will wish you to follow. If you get no satisfaction there then its possible that we can help with additives that might be of some help.

Once the appointment is over or my budgie's behavior changes I will post an update. Have a nice weekend and again, thank you all for your help. This is what he currently looks like:

If it weren't for the dark marks on his claws as well as beak, I would have said that he might have flown into something and bruised his beak. That's obviously not the case. Marianne Marlow, this little fella has multi-coloured feet like your Pete did.

Hello, as promised here is the update: The vet confirmed that Mellow (my budgie's name) does have a compromised liver. She gave him an injection (Vitamin B) and recommended a website where I could find food especially for budgies with this issue. The vitamin powder he's getting is also good. His weight seems to be alright, he's neither over- nor underweight. And that was all the information I got concerning the topic of his diet (I did mention that he refuses to eat fruit and vegetables). Mellow is doing fine. The bruise on his beak is healing and he's not as stressed as I expected him to be after the appointment. I'm honestly still a bit unsure if I got enough information but I guess that is it for now. Thank you again for your support and I hope you had a nice weekend!

Do you think you can get him to eat Dill? My Custard had a liver issue and he loved the dill. It's meant to be good for the liver. I am sure that Hezz can recommend some things too.

Thank you for the suggestion! I'm going to buy some after New Years and try it out. It would be great if he eats it since he's refused everything I tried so far...
