Hi all, Does anyone know approx how long a chick takes to break out of its shell. I checked this morning about 10ish, egg was cracked, checked again around 3ish this afternoon, no progress made. I am concerned for the chick, so am hoping someone can help. Thanking you in advance Bizzly

Roughly 40 hours. After that there is a possibility that the chick will not be able to get out of the egg without our assistance.

40 hours is a long labour.......no wonder hens lay eggs, instead.

wow, I'm surprised its that long! I guess that's probably down to seeing things hatch on TV and only catching the last part 40 hours is a long labour.......no wonder hens lay eggs, instead. An egg should hatch 24 to 36 hours after the appearance of the pip mark (a small dent with very small cracks) on the external side of the egg. Because the chick pips 1/4 of the egg at a time in a circle and then rests for an extended period of time. Some chicks pip half the egg at a time and then rest. If after 48 hours no change occurs in the appreance of the initial/original pip mark, the chick will not survive as he may be weak and unable to make further marks. Sometimes after making pip marks on half the egg and resting, the chick reverses the direction resulting in making pip marks on the same half side which was done already. Thus he becomes weak and requires assistance in hatching. I have experienced that most chicks are able to hatch within 40 hours. Trying to assist before that can result in chick’s death.

around 24 hours, its was just that I googled it first of all, and some say 2 - 4 hrs, so I was getting worried, some even said pick the shell with tweezers, then I thought, the one and only place I should ever ask questions is here, and how glad I did, as so far so good,
