Yesterday disharmony entered the Hamberley. I noted immediately it was between Ivo, Otis and Luca. Otis and Ivo came from the same breeder with Henry and from the start were bonded and would groom one another. Ivo is very giving with kisses and plays, preens and kisses any of the budgies. Up until now Otis hasn’t shown any signs of possessiveness. Ivo and Luca have always got on and often play together and share affection, but yesterday and today Luca and Otis are clearly trying to vie with one another over Ivo. The behaviour has continued during their free flight time. It has made me wonder about Ivo’s gender. It’s been difficult to get a really clear photo of Ivo’s cere but I managed to get a few videos of them this morning so perhaps the cere is more clear in them. Yesterday, Luca and Otis were just trying to chase one another away but today, as seen in one of the videos, they had a real beak-bashing argument. I don’t want anything to escalate. So does anyone think Ivo could be a hen and if so, what action should I take? I could try removing Otis or Luca to try and pair with Jasper or should I try adding Jasper to the Hamberley? Thoughts appreciated. Ivo (with Otis to the side and Luca right behind 🙄)

I am definitely not an expert, so wait for someone that is….but my guess would be that yes Ivo could be a hen…. What beautiful budgies you have 😘

Your Ivo and Otis behave just like my Buddy and Tweetie Pie both of which are clearly male. Like Otis, Buddy is quite a bit more playful than TP. He'll fluff up and want to play and TP will just sit there. Then Buddy will go play with a toy. Sometimes TP will follow and get between him and the toy as if to say "no, kiss only me even if I don't reciprocate". A couple of times TP has chased Buddy off my hand when he's been kissing my thumbnail. Sometimes when Buddy wants to play, TP will play, kissing him, bobbing his head, etc. Sometimes they do a playful beak bashing. I think, regardless of Ivo's gender, those two are bonded. It looks to me that Luca wants to play, sees that Otis wants to play and comes over to play but Otis wants to play with Ivo. I didn't see anything in the videos that would concern me enough to separate them. Maybe someone with more experience will have another idea.

I think Ivo is a boy. Remember he is a pied and so his cere is very likely going to be confusing. Budgie dynamics don’t necessarily play out according to gender, and a submissive male’s testosterone can be subdued around a dominant male or two.

Thanks everyone. I’m just going to keep an eye on them for the time being then. The main thing is that everyone is eating and showing no signs of being distressed or hurt. Ivo will tell the boys to get lost if he’s really fed up. In those videos I suppose Ivo was pretty much sitting there but he’s really active and plays a lot. I’m not sure how playful the beak bashing between Luca and Otis was. I’ve never seen any of the boys do that before so maybe it looked worse than it actually was. So a mix of opinions re gender. Thank you Hezz. It’s very hard to be sure with pied, which is why I wanted to see what everyone else thought. There’s just a bit of blue over the nares and between them. The rest of the cere is still a lilac shade. I’m not in the slightest worried about Ivo. He can handle himself. The issue is Otis and Luca squabbling. They’re back at it this morning. Really appreciate everyone’s opinions.

Ivo looks like a male to me, he's just quite passive. To be fair, if Ivo was a hen I think he would have biffed all those budgies that were vying for his attention as they would have got on his nerves!

Thanks Marianne Marlow. I can see why they want to be friends with him as he’s so sweet. Hopefully they’ll learn to share their time with him.

I would say boy also.
We had the same debate with Yuki for a while. Indie can be very possessive of Yuki and they're both boys.

Thanks Ira. I’m reassured Ivo is looking male to the majority. It’s been quite funny at times today as the three of them are just doing their thing, Louie and Henry have been sat together chatting away, no doubt laughing at the shenanigans going on. Interestingly, Henry steps in to separate Otis and Luca if they get too rowdy. I’d love to study budgie psychology…

Just watched these lovely video's, brings back so many memories of my gang Ivo is a boy for me too, obviously in very popular demand I love that Henry is being peace maker, bless him. My little peace maker was called Bertie, fondly known as PC Bertie, always breaking up a squabble and generally being a sticky beak Do they come out for free flying ariella ?

Yes, every afternoon they have free flying, so it’s not as if they’re getting under one another. They’re very good at using the whole cage when they’re in there too. Aww to little PC Bertie. We call our dog Chester Gromit as he practically eye rolls when he watches Potty Lottie our rescue pug when she’s being mad. He’s very sensible just like Gromit.
