Sam is gorgeous. I'm glad you've seen him eating by himself. I'm sure he'll soon be settled and enjoying his new home with you.

Thank you all so much for your comments - it really is stressful & you’ve all helped! He’s not eaten anything by himself yet today but maybe he will later. He has done some preening in front of me today, for the 1st time. He seems to have a itchy bum so that’s been getting attention (I’m hoping it’s just due to his erratic eating just now?) He really is quite a puzzle - he was even on 1 foot (briefly) earlier yet he’s still so quiet & still so he’s giving off both “I’m totally chilled” & “Actually I’m v scared” vibes at the same time! (& Hezz, he too will drink water from me fine!) Ps @samwiseg, I thought you’d approve! 😉

PPS his colouring is also confusing! In the pic I posted he looks grey but in other light he’s actually a pretty blue!

I thought he looked blue. Maybe the itchy bum is as you say, erratic eating. Maybe some got stuck with nerves etc

Well, we’re not really progressing here! Sam is still mostly staying in one place & not making any sounds (bar the very occasional tweet, maybe ~ 3-4 a day).
He’s now eating by himself, at most once a day, but not always more than just a little picking of the seed so we are still having to hold it up to him & try & coax him. I’ve found that if we leave it too long between offering it, then he kind of loses the notion of eating & it takes a lot to get him to start again (but when he eventually does, he realises he’s starving). Am I expecting too much too soon here?!
Some positives: he seems more relaxed with me & is doing a spot of feathering by me. He is also getting excellent at stepping up & seems to be learning what “Step Up” means as he is starting to do it just when I say it. Yesterday he had a look at his bell, he even rang it once. But it hasn’t been repeated again….

It's great that Sam steps up now. I'm sure he'll feel at home soon.
Randolph Carter was a funny boy when he was in quarantine. He was scared of everything new I put in his cage and hardly moved from next to his mirror, unless he was at his food bowl. Moving to a new home didn't put him off his food! .

I think whilst slow, he’s improving. As he’s not a baby, we don’t know what was pre you.
Bailey took forever to move about when I first had him

I guess it's hard for them to over come their instinct of 'if I don't move they can't see me'

If it is any consolation, Piper is slow progress as well and he is a baby, although he has just been through a mini-moult … it has been so hot! He is either bouncing off the walls, quite literally, to sitting in one corner if I enter his space, but then will eat out of his bowl or from a sprig of millet once I have managed to get him to step up. He’ll happily sit on my finger while I hold the seed pot - does he think he is still sitting on the edge of the pot, I wonder??

Sam does that with the seed pot too Hezz, sitting on my finger rather than the seed pot but not seeming to realise! They’re funny little things.

They are such daft, funny and amazing creatures. How is Sam settling now, starrymist?

They are such daft, funny and amazing creatures. How is Sam settling now, starrymist ? Well, he’s more relaxed and has done a few more cheeps & the bell is certainly of interest but he’s still not eating by himself or moving around much. It does feel like there’s a slight thaw though & that there is a character in there! And his stepping up is brilliant & improving everyday. He’s totally not afraid of hands in any way, it’s all quite confusing!

It is strange isn’t it. Is he having the same seed he used to?
