That a good idea, Sam, for Sam. . If eating on his own is the problem. Also the idea of another bird digging into his seed might be just the motivation he needs.

I applied it on the same principle as flamingo's!
There was a zoo that had a small group of flamingo's in and they weren't breeding and they couldn't work out why.
They then realised that they will only breed if they are in a large group so they put mirrors up in their enclosure and hey presto they then started to make nests and have offspring!

Just an idea starrymist but have you thought of putting a mirror behind his seed pot? Perhaps he needs company to eat a bit more and seeing another bird do it (i.e himself) might prompt him to eat more? Just a thought That’s a good idea! We’ve actually had a bit more progress today & he’s shown a little more of his inner budgie coming out (then going back in again!) & he’s eaten from his pot twice today which is impressive for him, so I’ll leave it another day or so & then try it. He does have a couple of mirrors in his cage & when I hold the pot up to him he will see it in the mirror but he hasn’t really looked at his mirrors so far. Today he has also moved about a bit more & he even had a feel of his basil leaves, didn’t actually nibble it obviously but he was investigating! A fresh bit has been placed in his clip daily but up till today he hadn’t even acknowledged it, I was shocked I tell you when I saw him at it!

I bet by next week, he’ll seem like a different bird Maybe not by next week, I don’t think Sam knows that speed level! 😉 But maybe by next month…. He’s definitely the most stubborn budgie I’ve come across!

I think Piper and Sam are working the same time line. I’m hoping that we are the tortoise in this race and slow and steady brings us home.

I always forget how slow going it is when you get a new bird as when your current flock they know the ropes so to speak it seems like they take forever! But am glad Sam is making progress, he will just do it in his timescale, but sounds like he's catching on

Well, despite the odd encouraging sign, things are still really difficult - yesterday was a particularly bad day & I’m exhausted. My activity levels are very low & I follow a pacing programme. Literally almost every single activity slot every day for over a month has been used on encouraging/ feeding Sam (thankfully I did my Christmas prep in the autumn!). So we’ve spoken to the vet & he’s going in tomorrow. I’ve put off this as if it is just he’s overwhelmed & scared then I’m worried a vet visit will set him right back but he will have been with us 5 weeks tomorrow. Any hugs welcome. 😢💙

Sending you a big hug from me and the buds. Hoping the vets won’t be as bad as you think and maybe he’ll find a reason for Sam being reluctant and it’ll be something easily remedied.
