Penny was used to make pretty babies for the "breeder" to hand feed and then sell as tame. I guess he gave her the right food and nesting conditions as she would not have laid eggs otherwise. I had read that with a budgie that you want to break the egg laying cycle, you should boil the egg(s), let them cool and replace them in the nest for the hen to sit on. She'll give up sitting on them soon but it will stop the egg laying cycle. Don't know how true that is because I've also read where breeders have hens that lay one batch after another. Is that what happened to poor Penny, Marianne Marlow?

Oh dear. Chocobo's weight is climbing rapidly again. I'm assuming that her recent successes in accessing the under-aviary nesting site have triggered another round of egg-formation and I can soon expect to see the results, probably by tomorrow morning. She's been very focused on regaining access to underneath the aviary. I'm confident I have all the accesses blocked now - just like I was confident beforehand. Sigh. I have one last card to play if she can still gain access and that is remove the casters on which the aviaries are mounted. I'm reluctant to do this as it will make the arduous job of cleaning the aviaries very miserable indeed.
My mind has been turning towards drastic alternatives. Including converting the alcove where the aviaries are located into a single large walk-in aviary. The birds will love it, especially all the new budgies I can get with the large increase in space. How did I ever get involved in this feathery rabbit-hole I've fallen into?

Or, and this is a long shot, could you make the underneath lighter so that she wont see it as a nesting spot?

This I can try! I'll see what effect it has.

She's utterly fascinated with the lamp I'm using to test the principle! Once she loses interest in it I'll be able to see if it is useful and then think about a more permanent implementation.

Well I'll be! Chocobo has been MIA for two weeks now, incubating her clutch of non-fertile eggs. I'd see her maybe three times a day when she popped out for food and water. In the past hour or so I've seen her three times now. She's coming out from her hidey-hole more often and for slightly longer periods. I think she may be giving up on the eggs. The budgies are all utterly fascinated with her (except Squeak of course, Squeak is too much of a hen for that!) and follow her constantly when she surfaces. Am I finally getting my chocobo back?

That sounds promising loz. Fingers crossed here that Chocobo decides she can’t be doing with this egg-laying malarkey.

Chocobo did not in fact have any of my homemade chicken & chorizo stew. It's very delicious but I'd feel odd feeding her chicken! Sorry to say, this is a pic from a couple months ago. She is still diligently incubating what looks like five eggs that will never hatch 😞 Poor Chocobo.
