Yeah it's tricky. Quite often when it gets to a certain time of the evening all of the budgies will sit in one cage together. I tend to cruelly make them all retire to their usual cages though - Evil mummy.

Ha ha! I have to do the same routine every night, if any tiny detail is different then they will not comply and things take ages

I only have two and they've made me a slave to their routine - what to feed, when to feed, where to put the food, what time is bedtime, etc.

My guys have a routine but they haven't told me what it is yet. Ten budgies is not easy compared to fifteen, it's only fractionally easier

Oh gosh, you must have felt awful when you coudn't find her. I think Chocobo is fascinating, especially in the ways she differs from the budgies. It's also really interesting how much the budgies want to be with her. Even with one budgie I have to stick to the routine or I get complaints

Chocobo spent last night on her usual cage perch with an honour guard of three budgies around her. She usually has budgies in that role, although it's not always the same three. I like that configuration because she doesn't get any hassle from restless budgies when she's trying to sleep. Plus the trust, on both sides, is a delight to see.
Chocobo grew up with budgies. She has adapted to a certain extent to being a highly social flock animal. I think if I tried to introduce a mature chocobo into this set-up, I would see a lot of problems. I could not even begin to contemplate bringing in a mature male. Nightmarish.

What kind of place did Chocobo come from? was is a pet shop?
So you have loose budgies and a Chocobo at night times?

I found Chocobo at a shop which I no longer frequent. It was my girlfriend at the time who wanted her but I willingly went along with it. I do doubt though I would have chosen a chocobo on my own.
In the shop, the very large cage had four chocobos and six budgies in it, plus a couple of cockatiels plus some kind of exotic fowl living on the floor of the cage. At the time I thought the birds all looked well and well looked after but on subsequent visits, the place didn't fill me with confidence.
My entire flock are free to chose a cage for the night and they all mix freely. When I had fewer birds, I tended to have budgies in one cage at night and Chocobo in the other but that changed when I reached twelve budgies.
If I were to somehow acquire another chocobo, I would have to rethink the current arrangement. I trust Chocobo with the budgies (and vice versa) but a new non-budgie would require careful observation and protocols, at least initially.
Note: I call them chocobos but they are popularly known as kakariki 😊

I may have misinterpreted your question, Marianne Marlow . I occasionally have Chocobo out of her cage at night. Not desirable but fixing it would possibly be worse. It's very rare indeed that a budgie spends the night out of a cage. I don't encourage it and I work hard at ensuring it doesn't happen but there have been odd exceptions. Not in the past few weeks though.

How fortuitous that your girlfriend wanted a Chocobo So you had Chocobo first and then got Hibs? No, we had Mr Hibs for a few months and then I insisted on another budgie for company. That turned out to be Eeyore. Later we discussed another budgie. Mr Hibs had taken ownership of Eeyore so we wanted another one for ourselves. We used to tell people, "We have a budgie, Hibsy and he has a budgie called 'Eeyore'". We went to the pet shop and found the absolutely most gorgeous budgie we had ever seen - it was heart-stoppingly beautiful. Unfortunately, a young girl had already chosen it and I felt bad about shoving the kid out of the way to make sure we got the bud. I often re-visited that decision in my mind. My GF looked at the kakarikis, two yellows and two greens and suddenly announced she wanted "this one". After some very quick internet research. we selected Chocobo (who initially was to be called 'Xanthe') and collected her the next day. Patch & Squeak arrived not long after the GF had moved out. I had become obsessed by budgies by then

Budgies are rather addictively 'collectable'. So many different colours and every individual has their unique personality. It's only my desire to work and interact with mine that helps keep my flock size down, I think.
