Hi there im new to this and im stuck on a suitable cage for my budgie ill be getting in sept/oct time. I have done so much research on cages and positioning. I have found this cage www.cagesworld.co.uk/p/Liberta_Okran_Medium_Bird_Cage.htm#revIts very reasonable and thinking now it might be a little on the small side. I was also reading about the cage positioning and its actually beggining to stress me out. I have two possibilities of places to put the cage. The place i wanted im really unsure of now, as i was measuring and realised the cage on the link above its 40cm by 40cm and i have a gap of 50cm before a radiator so there be like a 10cm gap and then to top it off that wall go off into a bay window and sometimes theres draft (not double glazed). That wouldve been an ideal place cos its in tv view aswell ( not sure if birds like to watch tv?). The other place is in the recess on one side of the fireplace there is a 86cm (would be 90cm but taking skirting boards into account) seems like a better position over the other position, but not in view of tv and right opposite is the lounge door about 12" away, hoping it doesnt get drafty right in that corner. Its driving me mad maybe im thinking to much into this whole positioning because im also stuck for a table or cage stand so its at a suitable height which i gather is chest level. I have looked at all sort of units and table but i cant find a table thats high enough and if there is height like say, a side table or telephone table the cage wont fit so there wil be an over hang of cage. I dont like the hanging cage stands and also that above cage opens out at the top. Im in such a dilemma and hope someone will read far enough to give me some pointers. I just want whats best for my birdie! Thanks in advance Gemma

hi Gemma .....nice to see you on here and asking about a cage and its size.... and where to put it . first things first drafts kill budgies so stand where your thinking of putting the cage get your hand wet and then see if you feel a draft ..if so its got to go els where .....and that cage ......is...... far to small.... and the .....bars are all vertical .....not good for your budgie when trying to clime up the bars. .. there is another thing most people dont think of..... and that is mounting the cage on a wall ... no need for tables or stands ...... just 2 simple hooks in the wall... there are many cages on ebay for sale ...and lots of people on here no where els to get them aswell... just look at other posts to see there cages ..... i hope this helps .... and by the way heres a very big welcome to the forum .... i hope you like it here .... regards mick.... ..

Hi Gemma. I think that cage is too small. Yes it would do at a pinch, but for a future home for your budgie get the biggest you can afford. And I mean in both cost and space to put the cage. I can't imagine fitting a cockatiel in that cage - that would be beyond cruel! As Mick mentioned drafts are not good, neither are radiators close by. But if it is a draft coming from one room into the other of the same temperature, it shouldn't be the same problem as a cold draft creeping in under a door for instance. I like the recess idea - it is bigger and allow you a bigger cage. Your budgie will get more from the noise of the TV rather than the visual stimulation, so that isn't a problem. Also with a bigger cage, many come with their own trolley/stand and that brings them up to a preferable height. I can't help you with cages as I am not UK based. Have a look through this: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=cagesaviaries&action=display&thread=12It may give you some ideas of what to look for. Hope that's of help.

Hi Mick and Hezz, Thanks for your comments that cage is out the question now, i liked the fact it had a opening top with landing perch.
As im a single parent im looking for a reasonable priced cage. I have just been looking at the Hagen Vision Bird Cage both L01 and L02
Measurements are L01: 75 x 38 x 55 cm (L x W x H) L02: 75 x 38 x 93 cm (L x W x H)
So same measurements but a difference of 38cm in height. Im hoping that this cage is a suitable length and it will fit perfect in my recess.
So its a toss up between those two cages unless i find another cage for sale on ebay/gumtree.
Would you guys suggest the tall one? Thanks again for your help

Hi Gemma, how much time is your bird going to spend in its cage? If it's going to be out most of the time then that cage would be ok. But if the bird is going to be spending a lot more time in the cage and only come out for a few hours a day then I would recommend a size bigger, maybe a cage recommended for cockatiels would be a good choice as the recommended sizes are always on the small side. I agree you should always buy the biggest cage you can afford with horizontal bars on at least two sides as they love to climb. Make sure the bar spacing isn't big enough for them to get their heads stuck, 1/2 an inch would be ok. Also, make sure he has lots of toys to occupy his mind and at least two perches, one slightly higer than the other. Clean the cage out at least a week with non-toxic sprays or use vinegar solution, as it works magic when cleaning bird poo off the bars of the cage! As for the positioning of the cage, I suggest you put it somewhere that is far away from any drafts, so don't put it near a door. If you get a cage with a stand it will be good because they like to be high up. Also putting the cage near a wall instead of in the middle of the room will make it feel secure. Buying a cage with wheels will help you move it around. Hope I helped!

Some people won't have vertical bars for their birds, but I for one don't find them a problem. Gemma, if you check out that link I gave you, you will find a number of cages there with vertical bars and the budgies are fine. They will use their feet and beak to get around the sides of the cage, even a sick bird will get around fine, although there of course the horizontal bars are better, as poor little bird doesn't need to be so acrobatic. The extra height between the two cages isn't a massive deal, unless you wish to get another bird, then the taller will help there. In most cases you will end up with one bird ruling the roost - it is called a pecking order for a good reason - and this bird will want the best perch, food, water, toys - everything. A taller cage allows you to spread things around so number two bird isn't left out in the cold with no food and no toys. A lot of people say their birds never use the bottom half of the cage, maybe if there is only one, but mine have always used the whole of the cage. They zig-zag from level to level; across, down, across, up and can keep it up for ages which is great exercise for them. All birds have their own personality of course and what works for one doesn't mean it will work for another for sure, (I am sure no bird has ever complained about its cage being too big!) but if the bigger cage isn't out of the question space and price-wise, I would get it - you even have a man-made cubby-hole for it to sit. Hope this helps your decision.

thanks for your comments again this has helped me alot in my search for a cage. I think i am going to go for the Hagen Vision cages although its a good length of 75cm the depth is not so great at 38cm but the budgie is going to have lots of out the cage time to spread his wings. now need to find a stand big enough! Thanks everyone! Gemma X

Having a panic, as just broke the base of my budgies cage, it was a lovely big one and the only spare I have is a much smaller cage, albeit sold as a large cage (its not) been ages since I bought a cage and now need one urgently, as we are on holiday next week and the birds go stay with my mum, but dont get out as much as at home, so cant be in this small cage. Is the vision 2 an OK cage, it a bit smaller in height than mine, but actually looks better as mine does have quite wide sapcing in the bars.

ordered the vision 2 on sunday and it arrived tuesday - good service from zooplus. It is a bit smaller than the old cage, but as they are out most of the day I dont tihnk it will be a problem. They are not keen on going low for the food, so had to use the coop cups from the old cage, maybe over time they will get used to it.

Using the old seed pots and keeping the food up high has its advantages, but if you want to get them using the new ones why not put the old ones in and gradually lower them so that they end up at the same level as the new pots? Then you can remove the old ones and the birds should be happy with where the new holders are.

Im getting rather impatient now...why on earth i set up the cage already when i still have to wait sept/oct for my bird lol. Reddeeps what is the model of your cage, mines the L02 its huge you mustve got the size down from me. I know what you mean about the feeding pots being at the bottom. The good thing about them is there got a little roof over them to stop the spoiling of food. I hope my bird doesnt have a problem with the food being at the bottom, but then again your birds were used to being at another height, my bird is only gonna be five weeks old. The only thing im not too sure about on the cage is the door openings. they open so the door goes in the cage at a 45 degree angle. If they opened outside the cage at a 45degree angle it could act as a landing perch for when there out the cage. I have been looking at toys for bird there are some such cool one, like the basket ball one and little cars for them to sit it lol. One question is do i get a mirror for the bird, but i heard but might stop a bird from talking if he cant talk to himself on his own. Thanks Gemma Attachments:
