I have a breeding pair who are successfully rearing six babies. The youngest is 24 days old today, the oldest is 35 days old. I checked on them yesterday afternoon to find that the hen had laid an egg!
I don't want them to go another round and I am worried about the hen attacking the chicks when she has laid a second egg and starts sitting on them. She hasn't shown any signs of aggression yet but I don't want to risk it.
Barrie has given me advice on facebook, as has Gaile, but I just wanted to clarify a few questions I have. He has told me to remove the eggs and replace with marbles (I don't have any dummy eggs) Wait until the youngest chick is 28 days old then remove the nestbox and the hen from the cage.
My questions are: If, at 28 days old I remove the nestbox can I leave the hen with them if she has shown no signs of aggression or will she want to continue laying eggs even with no box?
When removing the hen I know I've not to put her straight back into the flight, Barrie said I have to "get their body temperature lowered" Can someone explain this to me please, and what the hen will need nutrition wise before she is okay to go back into the main flight.
If I do have to separate the hen from the cock and chicks will I be okay to move them to another cage? I've ordered a wire cage for them, and leave the hen on her own in the breeding cage for a week?

if you don't want to use the breeding cage,i would be inclined to leave the chicks and cock in there and move the hen into the other cage,as for food i just give them what they have had whilst breeding for a couple of weeks, good luck

During incubation a breeding hen has a high body temperature to aid in incubating her eggs Rachael , it is always wise to give her time in a cage to adust to her normal temperature before returning her to the aviary.
Leave the male and chicks in the breeding cage and move the female.

Hi Rachael As you know, I am not as experienced with breeding as others, but one of my breeding females had 1 chick in the nest still when she started laying eggs again (she layed 7 fertile eggs) I think it was too stressful on her because 5 days before the first was supposed to hatch, she died in the box I think it was my fault So I would say remove all the eggs she lays from now on and when all the chicks are weaned give her a break (she'll need it after raising 6 chicks!) and maybe if you still want to let her breed put the boxes in again when she is in condition Hope this helps, Nicola

Okay so she has laid two eggs so far, one I removed and replaced with a marble, the second she laid yesterday so I am going to replace that today with a marble too. The youngest chick is already coming out of the nestbox and running around, two days early but still If I were to remove the nestbox on monday, when the youngest will be 28 days old will I be okay to keep the mum with dad and chicks? Would it cause any problems for her, me removing the nestbox so suddenly? Also I have bought a nice cage from supapets that I would love to transfer them all too when I can as it has more room and its a wire one so I can hang toys up for the chicks and have more dishes for them. Is it too soon to move them all? Would it upset the hen and cock to be moved? I don't want to do anything that could cause them to stop feeding the younger chicks. Help! lol ;D

LEAVE them in the breeding cage , if you believe they would be better all together then do that now and remove the box.

Leaving the chicks with cock and removing the hen has always worked for me

I've had a busy few days so I haven't had much chance to come onto the forum. I removed the nestbox on Monday morning and Evie has been perfectly fine since Her, Theo, and the babies are all happily still together ;D

Great Not quite BB, the hen, Bella, in my other breeding pair laid an egg on Tuesday I'm going to take it out and replace it with a marble today. Its very unlikely its fertile anyway because out of six eggs last two only two hatched.

Oh dear, I've just had all the budgies out of the cage and there were two eggs hiding on the cage floor. I thought she had stopped laying them. I think I will have to set up the spare cage and separate her from Theo and the chicks. After a week she can go back into the flight
