This morning something had appeared on Berry's head. It was definitely not there last night. At first I thought it was an abnormally developing feather, but on scrutinising pictures, it seems like this is a substance which is on other parts of his face. Could it be vomit I wonder? There seems to be more of it in the first picture, before I put in water for a bath, and then there is a bit less. If it is vomit, is there anything I should be doing? As many of you know, he has beak & feather disease which started to manifest about 20 months ago now. His feather quality seems to be getting poorer quite rapidly. He seems bright enough in himself, but I cherish every day of his impish pinging presence as he is vulnerable to the development of this condition and secondary illnesses. Any comments welcome.

It looks like he has regurgitated food and shook his head whilst doing it. Is he eating and drinking? I have seen this before with my regents parakeet, she had sour crop. Not wishing to alarm you but if you can get hold of him and feel his crop, if it's squishy it could be sour crop. I also had it with a chicken and had to tip her upside down and massage her crop to remove the fluid build up. I did this several times a day. I wouldn't try it with a budgie though as a bird can suffocate very quickly when the fluid is draining, you can only drain the fluid in short bursts to allow the animal time to breath.

Forgot to mention, if the fluid is not drained the bird will drown..

Thanks for response, SQ.
That does sound alarming - I hope it is not sour crop. He has been eating this morning (haven't seen him drinking), and is behaving normally.
I wouldn't attempt to get hold of him and feel his crop as he is so small and wriggly it is very difficult even to get him into a box to weigh him, and I wouldn't feel confident attempting to feel his crop. He is also very nervous.
I'll keep a close watch and if there is any development, think about what to do next.

Sour crop can turn nasty very quickly. Basically the crop fills up and drowns the bird. That's how we lost our regents parakeet, she died over night before we knew anything was wrong. They do carry on as normal but the food they eat can't get past the crop so it fills up. Barrie Shutt has a description here. www.officialbarrieshuttbudgerigars.com/sourcrop.htm

Thanks, SQ. This is not good. The fist picture on that link looks too like Berry this morning.
RE other post I am wondering if it is just a coincidence that Charlie has backed off Berry in the last few days.

RE other post I am wondering if it is just a coincidence that Charlie has backed off Berry in the last few days. Just read your other post. Could be they both have an infection so are hiding away from predation risks. We used to find our chicken hidden away when her crop needed emptying, we knew she was feeling unwell due to the hiding.

I really hope I'm not upsetting you birdguhl I just feel you need to know the dangers and there is no nice way of putting it, Sorry. I hope with all my heart it's nothing but I think he needs to be seen by a vet to rule it out.

I have phoned the vet and asked for a callback. They don't have an evening surgery today. Tomorrow is difficult for me. I also cannot afford another round of vet bills...

Hope the vet can help Berry. He is much too cute to be sick. Let us know how he is feeling.
