Hi my 5 year old budgie was hiding inside the aviary, a trip to the vets and he came back with some antibiotics to put in his water. He still goes inside sometimes but appear to be improving. I noticed he has a crusty beak and sore feet so did some research and it appears he has mites, scaly beak/feet. I've bought some lotion but the other birds are now itching like mad - the scaly lotion is for the beak and feet, does it get rid of mites in general? They are all scratching themselves all the time it must be driving them mad. Or do I need to buy some sort of drops to kill the mites on their bodies? thanks

The lotion will not work now. You will have to treat them all, as well as clean and disinfect all your setup.

One drop behind the neck, between the shoulders, where their beak can't reach while preening.
Preventive dosage is one drop every six months. Treatment dosage is one drop every week for three weeks, or until the bird recovers (in extreme cases).

Thank you for this - I will buy some today. Not sure how I can weight them though? Shall I just put one drop on ?

BudgiesBuddy has given expert advice for treating your birds. I would also advise one drop per bird. Just to point out that that it must be applied to the SKIN in between the shoulder blades otherwise they will not be treated effectively if it is on their feathers. Hope your birds are ok

I've bought the treatment and am just awaiting for it to arrive (hopefully today or tomorrow), and I will treat all my budgies. However my 5 year old Bertie doesn't seem able to fly. Is this because of the mites? Or because the mites have given him an infection? I am very worried, and have brought him out the aviary incase he falls off a branch and hurts himself. He can flutter about but when he falls he claws his way up with his beak and feet.

Can you post a picture of Bertie so we can have a look?

Yes, a photo is definitely needed, please. The mites themselves are not going to stop him flying, but he may be feeling generally unwell with it, but I still think there must be more going on, to hinder his flight to that extent.

This is Bertie ^^ this was taken a few days ago whislt he was still in the aviary but not able to fly properly. He is still on his antibiotics from the vet from a couple of weeks ago, which I put in his water. He chirps away but it's just the flying, like he isn't strong enough anymore?
