Yesterday a lady brought us a budgie, she said her cat had brought it in and she couldn't find the owner and had heard that we had budgies amongst other birds. She will put a notice up in the village shop to say that a bird was found and where it is.
The problem is, it can't fly. It tries to fly but plummets down like a brick. We put it on the floor and it tries to fly but can only get up 1 or 2 inches. It's hard to see what is going on but it almost appears there is a balance problem involved.
Any ideas what might be wrong? Could the bird have been locked in a cage without time out to exercise/ fly? Or does it sound like an injury? Then again, if it was an injury, would he still try to fly like he is? He's eating fine and seems happy, even chirped a little when he was out on the floor today. He's tame and will sort of sit on the finger or hand when lifted into or out of the cage.
Our other birds are out in a heated shed and aviary but the new one is indoors for now.

Hello and welcome.
Any chance that you could post a photograph of the bird in question?

I'm not sure about the inability to fly but I have heard that cat saliva is very dangerous to budgies so it may be a good idea to take him to a vet. I'm sure one of the more experienced people will be along soon to offer more advice though - as Marianne says a photo would help.

I agree with the others, a trip to the vets may be in order, just to check the little one is okay. Also could you post photos? Not being able to fly could be one of a few things. Its wings could be clipped, it could have an old injury, or the cat may have hurt it.
I have recently taken on a budgie who can't fly and this is because one of her wings is damaged although its unclear if she was born like that or was injured at some point. Anyway my point is that she is always trying to fly. She launches herself off my hand and lands with a thump. Even when a budgie can't fly they will still try.

I had the budgie out of the cage again and his right wing is "drooping" a little and it seems he's not able to use it right when he tries to fly. But I have seen him stretch it out. I've uploaded pictures here: picasaweb.google.com/ferretlove.uk/BirdsDon't know if I can attach or insert multiple pictures here, I'm not that experienced with message boards. He's not been bitten by the cat as far as I can see, just "carried" in the cat's mouth. His feathers were a little ruffled. I'd be surprised if he was to die since it's already been 36 hours. He seems like a lovely bird and I hope his wing is fixable... Ulrike Attachments:

Any bird bitten by a cat will die Just been to your web site, nice work. I now understand why he could die, wish I had been aware of it. He will go to the vets first thing in the morning. How long does it take for pasteurella to affect a bird? And what would be symptoms? So far he's eating and alert. I hope he's one of the lucky ones that survive. Ulrike

I would have thought that the bird would be showing signs of illness by now if the cat had contaminated it. It's a wonder the poor little thing didn't die of shock! Good luck with the vet, hope your little newbie recovers the use of his wing.

Thank you for all the replies and well wishes for the budgie. :-) Been to the vets and the vet gave us Baytril. She didn't think it was necessary since there are no wounds on the budgie and she thought if he was going to be ill, he'd be ill by now. But as we are paranoid and thought "better safe than sorry" we asked for antibiotics anyway so we got some. She examined the wings and couldn't find a problem so I hope he will be able to fly soon, if not we'll go back to the vets. Ulrike I hope these work:
