To Rachel, hezz and mickmay: Could you please explain the consideration of quarantining newly arrived budgies? I don't get it at first. I mean I would think that if I put a newcomer bird completely separate from the other birds than when I move it to the other birds it will be another "moving" for it. Isn't that so? Please explain, I would like to understand the >why< also, not only memorize the >how<.

Quarantining is for the new bird and the current birds safety. Either could have an illness that they may pass on to one and other that did not show up at first and it could spread.
This can be dangerous.

This can be dangerous. Okay, I understand. I thought it was connected to the "frightened budgie" topic. He was together with ca. 30 other budgies at the breeder's aviary when we took him home. He (the breeder) said that all the birds in that aviary are healthy. I'm looking forward to have my own house so I can build a bird's house - I will definitely do quarantine the new birds then.

Hector, unfortunately you can't always rely on others to tell you the truth. No breeder worth his salt is going to tell you he has a sick bird and try to sell one on to you, but unless you know the person very well, how can you be sure there are no health problems in his aviary? Sometimes illness isn't apparent, but stressful situations can allow an underlying illness to become noticeable. Being moved is a stressful thing for the birds, and this is often when illnesses/diseases can become obvious - if you have a quarantine period of one month, this is usually considered enough time for any weakness in the new bird to become evident. Sorry for the confusion, the quarantine question was an aside from the scared budgie issue. Glad to hear he is relaxing gradually.

after martin bought his budgie he put it in with his other budgies the same day ...but it had been in contact with a budgie with scally face ...this budgie and half of the others ......then showed symptoms of scally face ...he had to scrub every thing with disinfectant...and treat the hole flock... Quarantining..would have stopped this ....other wise it would have been just the new budgie to treat i to am guilty of not Quarantining in the past ...but like most.... i was lucky and got away with it ...but it only taks one .budgie ... i now always Quarantine....... ....i hope this helps .. .

Thanks guys! These information are golden! I have put the newbie into another cage, together with 3 younger birds as Barrie suggested. I hope it's not just me and my hope, but it seems like that he is getting better day-by-day. He is eating a lot; and it's kind of hard to resist those other youngsters - they are very active and playful; one of them is completely tame (loves to chew on my fingers - or whatever part she can reach on me . So, I'm still hoping the best. And at the same time I feel sorry for this bird and also for the hen he was meant for, because she is so lonely and would want to breed a lot. Will keep you posted if something happens. I'm planning to keep the new budgies with separate from the hen for at least a few more days. I hope I will see huge progress in a long period of time. Merry Christmas!

That's great, Hector. I am sure you are not imagining things and he is settling down and eating more etc. I think he will be a delightful addition to your birds. You and he just didn't have the best start together.

Thanks ya'll! Well, I guess it's a big step to the right direction that I heard his voice today - the first time! Also the egg count was at 5 yesterday. One more should arrive today.

All right, just a short status report here. He started to play with some of the toys inside the cage. Also interacting a bit with the other birds. One of them is really trying to be friends with the "new guy". The are wobbling their hads for each other every now and then. I have heard some different sound from him as well. (when playing or chit-chatting with the other bird) I'm positive that he is still getting better; didn't stopped in the progress. Too bad that he is quite afraid of me... But I think it helps a bit that I'm playing with another bird from the same cage (I just call her "Commandos" most often through the cage wires; hoping that also he will be less scared from me when seeing that I mean no harm/threat for the other budgie - which is chewing on my fingers, sits on them and plays completely fearless.

Well, I moved him back to the hen's... I have noticed that he looks exactly like a bird I had previously (I mean the form/shape of his body, the shape of his head, his eyes and his look, also the way he behaves - all exactly the same). With that bird I had a problem that another male bird got "attached" to him: they have spend all of their time together. It didn't seemed to be too healthy... neither of them care about any other birds including the hens in the same cage... Now I noticed with this new budgie that he started to bond with one of the young males from that cage. So I moved him back to the hen as precaution... I'm still confused though... He is a piece of work!
