Dear All, I'm a bad guy checking back here only when I need to ask questions. (it's because the lack of free time...) So... Yesterday I got a cock bird to have a pair for my remaining hen which wants to mate badly. In his first 12 hours at our place (okay, night included) I haven't seen him eating or drinking. He might had drunk, that goes fast, but I'm sure he didn't take any food. My real concern is not this, but that he behaves strange: sits at one place, doesn't move, won't communicate with the other birds, doesn't gives a sound. When I'm approaching him, he doesn't shows any sign of recognizing that somebody is approaching. I can kind of wave with my hand 10 cm from him and no reaction. When I'm getting really close or even touch him than he starts to fly away scared. How could I find out for sure if he got some serious issue with his vision? Also could this be a disease - any chance that it is infectious!? Cheers, Hecky

Okay, I thought I should take some pictures from him. Beautiful bird IMO. ...but what's wrong with him? The hen on the pictures is already crazy for him. Courts for him and all. But no response... nothing.

I am sorry I can't help you there, Hector. His eyes (from what we can see) seem fine, don't they? They aren't cloudy or damaged in any way? He certainly is a pretty thing. Hopefully someone with experience with this will be able to help you.

That's true, Mick. But you would think the little fella would follow the arm moving through the air..... Maybe he is just really frightened....

Surely it means that his eyes are not reacting to the light of the flash if he has no iris?

Thank you all for the replies. He is much more alert today? seems to be much better. He must have been frightened then I guess… Poor one, he was captured in the aviary, put into a transport cage, then wait ca. 10 minutes in a room where a dog showed up suddenly. Then got transported in another cage for 20 minutes... And the rest is all my fault: I took him out from that new cage (thought I will let him fly around as it suits him 'till I set up the cage with the perches and stuff). But he was too scared and didn't really found a place to settle down just flew around and got tired so I had to put him into a cage with some young birds 'till I was done with his new cage. Then I put him in there with his new mate. Poor one, I had no idea that one can be so frightened. I didn't meant to scare him. But his new hen liked him even as a sculpture. Courted to him with full force. I hope he will be all well soon and they will like each other ever after. He does have iris ring. I have just checked him with a flashlight and reacts to the light. Will take a close-up picture later today. Can we say that he must have been frightened? Or do we need to investigate more? I will take the picture anyway!
