That is not a good sign. I suggest you thoroughly check the entire cage for other signs of the base metal showing. If there is any rust forming or showing anywhere then it is best to replace the cage. Rust is poisonous to budgies and they can come into contact with it by climbing around the cage.

Agree with OP I'm afraid sandyxrs you will need to replace the cage as soon as you can really There are many cages to suit all budgets but first things first it needs to be budgie safe paint on the bars or safe metals. There are a few ideas here and some of our members set ups here but as we advise all our members get the biggest you can afford and the most width not height of cage as budgies dont fly up! Hope that helps

I can't understand why painted cages are even sold. It seems like another sand sheet scenario, as long as people buy them they sell them regardless of the damage they can do log term.

Unfortunately people that come into budgie keeping, myself included, know nothing about the dangers of cheap;y produced cages. That is how these companies can get away with it. Like anything in this world a good quality of cage is more expensive. Until we actually connect with knowledgeable people poor quality cages will continue to be sold. I know to my cost (financial) the importance of getting a good strong cage with paint finish to match. The Hamberley as withstodd the best efforts of Edward to liberate the paint from the bars.

There should be a law against this kind of thing. This country is supposed to be animal lovers so why are these people allowed to get away with selling things that harm them? I think it's criminal. Also if these cheap items weren't available then the purchase on a whim may stop and there would be far fewer unwanted pets. Stepping down off my soap box.

Aren't they the lucky ones. Seriously though that was the best option. Well done.
