Good luck with giving the injections Shirls, at least it saves you trips back and forth to the vet, don't know if I'd be brave enough though. Where on the chicken do you inject her Shirls? Are they still locked up, or has the ban been lifted?

Good luck with Hazel Shirls , have to say i think i would really have to psych myself up to give injections, your a better woman than me that's for sure If someone had told me last January that this time this year I would be injecting my dog twice a day without even thinking about it, I would have said they were mad. But when it comes to it and it's life or death you just do it. Save

Animals are generally very good with injections - no one has told them that a needle is a scary thing and might hurt a bit. You will be fine, Shirls, and I have everything crossed that Hazel will be as well.

The injection is given low down in muscle to the left or right of the (central)keel bone. Chickens bruise easily so better not to inject in the same place, but near to if possible. It's only 5ml so should go in quickly. My daughter was diagnosed with diabetes at 17 months old, we had to learn to inject, as starlingqueen said, 'it is a case of inject or die', so one has to do these things. It isn't easy by any means, but one does get used to doing it. My daughter started doing her own injections when she was 8yrs old. She is now on four a day.

Just to let you know how devious cunning I am, I keep going into the garden and slipping, secretly, a grape to Hazel. Hopefully, when the time comes for her injection she will be my BFF, and come quietly and well behaved!!! Grape as a reward too!!

Bribery and rewards are definitely allowed on the agenda. As long as she doesn't associate grapes with being grabbed and injected ..... I doubt it, though.

Deed is now done, thankfully. Was quite easy, Hazel was as good as gold. Three more days to go! I hope I have enough grapes to last - had to give some to the other chooks prior to injection time so they all had a treat!

Hazel's last injection was yesterday. She seems fine, fingers still crossed though. She came down to get her grape this morning as usual, these chickens do have good memories!! I am still her best friend despite giving her the injections. She follows me round in the garden on the off chance she will get another grape. I have rather spoiled her these past few days.
