I am sorry to say that Hazel isn't out of the woods yet. She still has laboured breathing, but not with her beak open which must be a good sign. I can't speak to the vet until Thursday morning unfortunately. These vets have a 'throw away line' like 'you can ring me if you are worried' then they go off grid for three or four days!!

Hi Marianne Marlow. Hazel is ok in herself and is doing what 'normal' chickens do. The only way I can tell with her breathing is if she is sitting down and I haven't been able to catch her doing that yet!! It's been raining and I have also been out. I spoke to the vet (she is brilliant with chickens) and she said to try and get a video of her when she is at rest to capture how she breathes, then do the same in 10 days time and see if there is any difference. (Good idea, yes?) Apparently she will now always have scar tissue on her lungs, but may need a course of AB's one more time in two weeks, just to make sure the infection has gone. So it's just a case of monitoring her for the present. I have to withdraw her eggs for 8 days after the injections, which is a pain, as we are not getting many eggs at the moment!! The trials and tribulations of bird keeping aye? Thanks for asking Marianne.

Thanks for the update Shirls, yes the video is a pretty good idea. I hope you manage to see some improvement in her.

Chooks tend to breath heavy when laying down generally Shirls. When I first kept them I thought there was something wrong. So a video is a good idea and also compare her to the others.

Sounds like you need the weather to behave and all the planets to line up before the said video can be taken. I hope she isn't more likely to succumb to the same sort of thing in the future, the way some people are. Take it easy Hazel; my diagnostic remedy for you is more of those yummy grapes from Mum.

Chooks tend to breath heavy when laying down generally Shirls. When I first kept them I thought there was something wrong. So a video is a good idea and also compare her to the others. I took the said video yesterday when she was sat next to Dusty. Dusty's bum didn't move AT ALL, where as Hazel looked in real trouble! But Hazel does tend to sit on a railway sleeper and I'm sure this pushes all her organs up which makes her struggle to breath. However, Hazel is doing pretty good in all other respects. She is even laying an egg every day. Vet says to discard the eggs for 8 days. So I cook them and give them back to the chooks, shells and all!!

Is the reason for discarding the eggs because she's on antibiotics? if so then is it wise to feed them back to the chickens? Sorry if I got the wrong end of the stick!!

I would imagine that cooking the eggs will break up the AB integrity to a certain extent, and not eating them yourself is a precaution. ??
