WAHOO im so happy,Elfie stepped up today around 8 times or more, first of all he jumped straight back off and then he decided to stay on for a few seconds longer,it wasnt even for a treat of millet...i did however just say "up" as i was so excited i forgot to say "step" up, is it easier for him to understand if you say "stepup"? You'd have to ask him that, lol. I know we're good, moogie, but not quite psychic........... still working on that one. ;D ........ anyway, whatever works for you. But well done, things are progressing!

With Puck I found not connection between me saying commands and him doing things - I did try for a long time with them . I know others do, so I may well be in a minority here. I found that using hand signals worked best. So to step up/fly to me I'd hold my finger out in the normal way. To land on my shoulder I'd tap it, same for my my lap if I'm sitting down. I guess its not like you have to pick one or the other though

Ah, don't worry, we all ask daft questions some times in our life. I am sure Elfie knows best, lol. Now, I don't usually even get a chance to say anything, the finger goes out and the birds fight over who is going to be first out of the cage. Am still trying to teach Sparky that it is age before beauty, and he comes last! ;D

well,we have come a long way in such a short space of time and now every time my finger goes towards Elfie and i say up his little left foot is in the air and then he steps up- The other day i did try and bring him out in to the world out side his cage but he wasnt having any of it haha so i m going to bring him down to the open doors feed him some millet and bit by bit over the next few weeks edge him further and further out and hope that he will finally not mind coming out of his home xx

He certainly is a very different looking budgie. Too cute. In that last photo he looks like he has laugh lines around his eyes. Keep working on him, moogie, we want Elfie to enjoy the big wide world outside his cage. He doesn't know what he is missing out on, and it is your job to show him! Once you get him out, he won't want to go back.

Elfie is such a darling. Once you get him out of the cage, you'll have to new problem of getting back in! That one is even more, er, fun.

Well done Moogie - and well done Efie! Am sure he will be out in no time, as Stace said, you'll have fun trying to get him back in! But once they are used to your finger it does make it easier love your pics btw

i m going to bring him down to the open doors feed him some millet and bit by bit over the next few weeks edge him further and further out and hope that he will finally not mind coming out of his home xx That's exactly the three things I would recommend: Slow incremental steps + persistence + millet ;D He's a very pretty birdy, glad its going well for you!

Today was funny,i moved him once again to the door (whilst feeding millet of corse) and i think to both of our surprise he was out!!...at first he did not realise as he was munching away and then he saw he was out,he did not panic but just climbed onto the side of the cage and headed up to the top once he realised that that was not where the door was he calmly came back down again, made a detour to the left and jumed back in to his fav perch ...made me laugh.....

That's wonderful - no panic. Next time, and the next and your little fella won't remember his reluctance. He seems such a laid-back little guy, I am sure he will have the run of the house in no time.

Elf is out of his cage & LOVING it! ;D He didn't panic just flew around and then sat on a perch chirping and preening,he is still there...I did (after and hour and half try to get him to step up but he was having none of it ha ha (is that normal for the first time or few times out of the cage?) in his cage he steps up straight away every time so im not sure if this will now just be an in the cage situation or when he comes out more and more he will then step up when he needs to go back in? Anyway-I am so happy he is happy and having the freedom he deserves
