like you do with all these birdies. I have been keeping an eye on Tuppence (my chookie) as her breathing has been quite laboured lately. Having just lost two chooks to chest infections I felt it necessary to take Tuppence to the vet. The vet said she had a slight wheeze on the left hand side, so yes, you guessed, 5 days of injected Baytril again! Her last injection was day before yesterday, so am still keeping a close eye on her.
I feel her breathing is quite laboured as she is quite a big lady. I weighed her the other day and she was 10lb 2oz. so over a period of time she had lost a whole pound. (I put her on a diet you see!!) Plus of course we have had quite a few very hot days which doesn't help. Thankfully, touch wood the other two girlies are fine.

I hope that Tuppence will be okay.
Also hope that the other girlies stay in good health.

Oh, dear. That really is not good. Fingers and feathers crossed for a bounce back to health for Tuppence.

Good luck Tuppence. And I thought budgies gave us grey hair, or is that just old age.(mine)

You've not had an easy time of it with these girlies Shirls. I hope the Baytril helps Tuppence. She's in good hands.

You poor thing Shirls, you are really going through it with these chooks. I hope Tuppence recovers for you.

Nobody told me it would be this hard to keep chickens! Perhaps the thorough breed type are less hardy than the others???

I just think you are really unlucky Shirls. I have had my French Marans for nearly 8 years with no problems (touch wood) I fully expect to lose them soon as they are old but still seem healthy.

I'm not sure if this is worthy of following through with, Shirls ..... I know you have great faith in the breeder your girlies have come from, but I am wondering if she would mind giving you some contacts of others who have either her offspring, or simply Orpingtons in general. Maybe there is something you can learn about your set-up, or the breed itself, something that is not helping them stay in good health. Possibly someone who is prepared to visit and give you some feedback .... anything. Anything, to not see you suffer through the losses you have had to deal with in your short chookie-keeping time.

I've been thinking along similar lines in that there must be a common denominator, apart from old foxy. Obviously you know much, much more than I do. I just don't like to think of the suffering that you seem to be having Shirls.

Thank you Hezz and OP. I do hear what you are saying. I have researched everything possible as far as housing and ventilation and hygiene is concerned and do feel I can't do much more. I feel I may have been at fault with the ventilation thing in the coop and have increased this enormously. My first losses were down to the b**** of a breeder that I went to and I do believe Truffle and Hazel had a low immune system. All my other losses were due to foxes and one bumble foot (Georgie didn't survive the operation) and of course poor Phoebes died of shock. So basically it was only Truffle and Hazel down to an infection which may or may not have been down to the ventilation thing. BTW, on going to the bulk seed supplier yesterday, there was an advert board and a local chicken breeder advertising on it, so may have to research that a bit!! NOT that I am thinking of getting any more chooks at the moment!!!

It does certainly seem like a minefield but perhaps there is something in the original breed being hardier? Food for thought - Let us know when you plan to make a visit

You are, of course, correct, Shirls. All your losses have not been through the same infections, and I had forgotten poor little Phoebe and the fright that took her life. How is Tuppence today?
