Just WHAT is it with these men and quarantining!!! Or NOT quarantining. I would have been so cross!!! Anyway, I just love Loki he is beautiful Hezz and know he is going to have a wonderful time at your place. Can't wait for his wing feathers to grow back, he will have a ball flying about. Hope the budgies accept him too and don't get jealous. Looking forward to updates already.

We have to remember a couple of things. First is that he is still a baby, basically, and secondly that he is reliant on us for getting around. That's not something we are used to having to think about, what with the budgies taking themselves where ever they like. So no putting him down on a cupboard and leaving him stranded there, for instance. I have made him a little plaited paper rope so that he can climb back up into his cage if he wants/needs to go home at any time. And taught him to use it. Funny thing, he walked the full length of the house yesterday - Pete took him into the back room for some out time and he immediately fluttered down to the floor and walked back out to where I was in the kitchen.

He has quite taken a liking to you then Hezz, and he has a mind of his own. You have a friend for the next 30 years or for as long as they live. Did he stay on the floor or climb up to his cage?

I know it's a terrible shame he cant fly, but it must be so cute, and funny seeing him walking. You'll have to get some videos Hezz.

Yes, it can be quite hard having a non-flying bird relying on you (I type this with a Hector on my left hand playing with my thumb)

Oh Hezz I am soooooo envious! I have been trying to convince my OH to have a conure when our flock have sadly departed (not a sun conure) but one of the other breeds. I have done so much research on them and am sure you will have a wonderful time with your new ray of sunshine Loki! Cant wait to see videos and hear so much about how you two get on together! *swoon*

He simply strutted along the floor, very purposefully (I took a peak around a corner) and he never took a wrong turn into another room. Once he found me, I did pick him up. The rope only went onto the cage this morning .... one of those middle-of-the-night things that you think of. I had already made the plait but wasn't sure how to make use of it. After putting him onto it twice (sort of), the third time he took himself up the rope. I could have crowed with pride and pleasure. Sam, if you found any nuggets of information you would be happy to share, please do. I have picked starlingqueen's brain for tips as well. Thank you, SQ. xx (Think I have mentioned I have tried to get in contact with his breeder for first-hand info, rather than hand-me-down info, but to no avail. He is currently sitting on my shoulder, noisily beak-grinding and occasionally giving my ear a nibble.

Haven't read all the thread but if you want to keep his wing muscles in trim while he's growing his feathers back, you can hold him on your hand and gently lower it until he flaps his wings. When he gets used to that try running up and down the lounge, he should flap. Might feel silly but it gives the muscles a work out.

When he gets used to that try running up and down the lounge, he should flap. Might feel silly but it gives the muscles a work out. He does give his wings a real working out, and quite often. I have also done as you suggest, moving him up and down and see how well he recovers his balance by flapping. Also, because I am used to the budgies (fully able to fly) being able to hang on and recovering for themselves, I am not cautious when I walk around with him on my shoulder, so there are times when he has to flap to get balance and hold on tight!!! Poor little guy, though, I very much doubt that he has ever had the opportunity to fly!

That is sad. I used to "fly" little Ditto up and down the room, just to give her the feeling of freedom, she would flap her little wings and really seemed to enjoy it.

She had a good but short life with you little Ditto. I occasionally fly Hector around the room, he doesn't flap, but he does direct me where to go by leaning this way and that!

What a gorgeous bird! I do love these birds, such gorgeous colours and they seem to have proper cheeky personalities too
