I looked into getting google home mini as I thought it will interact with spotify free. It does... to a point. If you ask it to play a song, it will find something 'similar'. Well that's just not good enough. I also looked into google play music free version where you can upload your own music. I thought this will be great, a google product will surely interact with the google service but in the UK, it will only play music 'similar' to your request. The support person I spoke to said that you can cast it or pair it to bluetooth, but I said that would be too complicated for an elderly 80 year old with vision problems to handle, plus you lose a lot the voice commands. As a compromise, I thought I'd look into the paid music streaming services but on doing spot searches, music that my mum likes is not even available (hence looking into the uploading idea). It's all done my head in, quite frankly!

That's such a shame for your Mum, sweetpea. No one can say that you didn't give it your best shot.

That's such a shame for your Mum, sweetpea. No one can say that you didn't give it your best shot. It was meant to be a nice surprise for her so she's got no idea how much agony I've been through!

And nice surprise it would have been, had it worked out.

All mine (I have 4 of them) work almost perfectly. They are a godsend to me. The only time they don't play is when the buds are chirping or the broadband has gone down.As I'm going to bed I say "echo, goodnight", all the downstairs lights go off, the budgie light turns to blue and 50%, my bedside light is switched on ready for me. When I get up I say "echo, start my day", the bedside light goes off, the lounge light goes on, my computer monitors switch on as does the security monitor.Absolutely brilliant.

Well done OP. With your eye condition that must be a great help. I love mine too. I moved my Echo from the bedroom to the living room for the buds. Now it plays Gold radio all day 😀 and sometimes I play bird sounds for them. That's a real shame you were disappointed in the one you bought for your Mum sweetpea.

That's fantastic, OP - it's like you're living in the future. All you need is a transporter pod in the corner & say to Alexa, transport me to Sainsbury's!!!

I could have the shopping come to me sweetpea. But I would rather go get my own from the supermarket. If it gets damaged on the way home then it's my fault.

On that note OP, getting your own shopping, I always felt the same until I had it delivered! I only do a big shop about every 5 weeks or so. I have thirteen concrete steps up to my front path and it is quite a task to carry about four or five bags up. I do little mini shops in between for fresh veg and milk and the like. Try it once, you might like it, it doesn't stop you from going out for small stuff.

The original Thirteen Steps eh! I don't so much as carry my shopping as pull it along in my shopping bag that has wheels, three each side. A lot easier for getting up and down steps, kerbs and on and off busses. I also get a few frozen things from a cheaper than average shop. Thank you for the thought but as long as I can still see to get about it's the supermarket. I will keep the delivery in mind for when I become unable to get about. That could be a while yet, hopefully.

Getting back to the alexa thing being tempremental - we have had a wireless room thermostat for the heating fitted that stopped working and then a new one fitted and that is so tempremental it's unbelievable?!
They are telling me that what with all the wifi we have in our homes nowadays it interferes with the transmitter on the thermostat. I woke up one winter morning and the heating hadn't come on at all and it was Bl**dy freezing!
It still acts up now, not sure what to do about it as if they replace it again it's bound to keep doing the same thing
