Thanks helenmat - yes, that's right, not knowing has been awful, he's had so many tests and the diabetes test on Monday came back inconclusive. Then the emergency scan got messed up through admin so instead of being done within 48 hrs the first appointment the vet could get at the specialists was next Tuesday. He was that bad the vet didn't think he'd get through this weekend. It's has been a bit of a catalogue of disasters, although I have to say none were the vets fault and she has been amazing. So yesterday she said we have no answers and it's almost been a week and he can't wait for this scan so the only thing she could do was open him up. He was scheduled for that today but as we got a positive yesterday and can administer insulin we feel he can hold on now until next week for the scan. The other thing is Alfie is around 8 and my other dog is 11, so I've always thought as Alfie as the baby. He's never ill, whereas my other dog has severe allergies and lifelong meds so I never really gave a thought to losing him first if that makes sense. Alfie being so severely ill really knocked me. I will never take anything or anyone for granted ever again as long as I live. Thanks Hezz I will message starlingqueen after I finish this post. The more information I can soak up the better. samwiseg sorry to hear you are being tested for Cushings. I've read a lot about it over the past few days as I was originally convinced this was what Alvie had, he has all the symptoms. I hope you get good results from your endocrinologist and that you are ok x

He is a jack Russell cross starlingqueen. I've just replied to your message, thanks again for your insight and help. Alfie and I are to go St Helens, a two hour round trip, on Tuesday for this specialist scan as he's proven positive for Cushing disease too He's to be starved in the morning......he is so thin I can't bear it. The vet has said reduce his insulin as he won't be having food. Hubby is away in Ireland on Tuesday for work. My poor Alfie.

Once they know what they are working with, at least then they can start treating him, poor dog. I know what you mean, regarding thinking of him as the younger, fitter member of your doggy world, so this must have come as such a blow. What a burden to have to bear on your own what with hubby being away.
Fingers crossed that Alfie starts feeling better very soon. Take care. xx

Thanks everyone. My coping strategy at the moment is one day at a time and the goal for Tuesday is to make sure Alfie is ok and that nothing we don't know about shows up on the scan.

Alfie had his scan today. I was so nervous about his sedation and the complication of his diabetes I was shaking.
Anyway, he was fine. When they brought him to the waiting room and I clapped eyes on him I actually screamed ALFIE at the top of my lungs and ran over with my arms outstretched. He was still drugged up but recognized me and everyone else looked at me like I was mad.. As it was a specialist they send the results to my vet and she then discusses it with us, but a nice vet nurse told me other than a large liver (probably due to the diabetes) there were no tumours in his abdomen. This is really good news obviously.
I'm wondering if the newly diagnosed diabetes which isn't under control yet has thrown the Cushing test to show a false positive. Unless there is a tumor on his pituitary gland. God forbid. It was late when I got back, OH is not back until midnight, I've called and got him up to speed on what's happened.
TBH I'm just glad he's home and ok from what he's had done today. I've a lot of gratitude.

Who cares if they thought you were mad? You were glad to see that he was okay, I don't blame you!
