I have been so worried about BertieB. I've been scared to come on here in case someone said he was going to die. I have been lifting the edge of his cover every morning and peeking in, frightened I was going to find him on the floor of the cage.
Although he has been happy, active and showed no signs of being ill, his droppings weren't right, watery and not much of them. He's been losing so many feathers and there was another incident of regurgitating/vomiting. I have registered with the nearest avian vet (40 miles away) but he was not in again until today. In desperation I called the breeder who is a good friend, and we broke the rules and he came round to see him. He thought Bertie was fine judging by his behaviour, advised me to stop feeding vegetables for a few days (he thinks Bertie has been eating too much lettuce), and gave me a supplement to put in his drinking water. He thinks Bertie is coming into his maturity hence the rergurgitating, is having a heavy moult.
I am so happy to report that his droppings are back to normal today and I woke up to a little pile of black and white. I never thought I'd be so happy to see poop.
I will be introducing vegetables gradually back into his diet.
Sorry I didn't come on here to discuss it.

Oh blue48 you are now one of the gang! Sometimes it does happen when you cant bring yourself to talk about it but you totally did the right thing talking to your breeder. If anyone should know (if any breeder is worth their salt) it should be them. But you dont want to cause uneccesary worry because you dont want to think that it is serious. We all understand how it can be very worrying when keeping a bird and thre are any changes to their poop! SOOOO glad Bertie is ok, moults can cause this too as they tend to eat more cuttle for the calcium and then of course drink more too hence the watery poops. But well done to your breeder. *thumbs up* Now where did we put that valium?

I'm so glad he seems to he fine now blue48. They don't half put our blood pressure up. I'd stay away from the lettuce, there isn't a lot of goodness to it, glad his poops are back to normal. It's the first thing I look at when removing the boys cover in the morning. We get poop obsessed 😂😂

Awww thanks both of you I came on and starting typing out posts a couple of times then deleted them because I couldn't really find the right words. I was worried, but Bertie was so happy and cheerful I was thinking "surely he can't be ill and be bouncing around like this". My lovely friend has been breeding and showing budgies for at least 20 years. His bedroom wall is covered in awards so yes, he knows his stuff and has assured my to ring him any time.

Welcome to the obsessed-with-poops gang! Pleased you were only in the scared-what-I-find-in-the-morning-gang for a short time. jellybean, I also look at their poops first thing, but also look for signs of blood & vomit (P&L vomit when stressed)!

Glad all ok, I think everyone carefully peeps underneath the covers in a morning. You worry yourself so much when they are quiet and then when they are noisy tell them to be quiet. You worry if they don't eat enough and then worry they are eating to much. Pip is in a really heavy moult too and is quiet and will not come out. He seems to go in a depression for a few days and then comes out of it.
I think we've all been where you have been. xx

So sorry that you have been so worried. My advice - skip the lettuce altogether unless it is of the very dark green or red kind and then only a little of the outer leaves. If he really does love his lettuce, try him with some of the asian greens instead or as well as.
For his moult, give him a little pot of eggfood (you can leave it in the cage) and he will help himself if and when he needs to.

Lettuce is one of the very few veggies he eats but I really don't want a scare like this again. I've stuck to just seed and water for the last couple of days. Tomorrow I'll go out and pick him some fresh seeding grass. I don't have egg food but I think pet shops are open so I'll get some, and maybe try him with some boiled egg until then.
Thanks for the advice.

Try him with some tender stem broccoli my two love it. I've tried that helenmat . In fact it would be easier to list what I haven't tried, he's a fussy little so and so. On a brighter note I got the egg food this morning and there is a little bowl on top of his cage. The instructions say you can feed it dry or moisten it slightly. I have given it dry for now in case he throws it off the top of his cage as he often does when he's unimpressed. Dry will be easier to clear up lol, but he hasn't even investigated it yet
