I've had my older budgie for approximately 6 weeks now, he was at least a year old when I got him. He's not very confident and seemed like he would be better with a companion, so about a week and a half ago I picked up an 8 week old chick who has some knowledge of greens, though he doesn't exactly rush to them enthusiastically like my old budgie used to.
Anyway, neither of them seems to know what millet is. The older one has randomly eaten the odd seed off of a spray or bobble, and yesterday the younger one was picking at his spray a bit when waiting for his seed bowl but is ignoring it today. Even rubbing the seeds off and mixing in their bowl those seeds tend to get left. There are mixed millets in their seed mix.
So I don't know whether this particular millet spray just isn't very good or if they're just not that interested in it.
Unfortunately this means I don't know how to reward them to teach them to step up.
I've managed to vaguely stick train the older bird just by pressing the stick against him. The younger one's quarantine cage is a bit awkward for that but he's confident coming and going.
They'll both eat from my palm, though the younger isn't comfortable standing on my hand to do so yet.
I've been putting my hand in the cage and just keeping it still every so often, though probably not regularly or often enough.
I know once they meet they'll have each other, but I'd like them to still have some sort of bond with my partner and I, and it would be nice if they were comfortable to sit on our hands.
Of course it's early days for them both, but is there anything else we could be doing?
