I think varying the veg is the way to go. My lot probably get bored of seeing carrot and broccoli every day, yet Munchy used to go bonkers with excitement when he only saw carrot once a week.

I let Penny out for 20 minutes in the passageway, on the floor. She definitely cannot fly as you can see by this short video.

Aww, bless her. It’s like she’s trying to. I’m sure you’ll provide her with as much enrichment as you can and she can have a better quality of life with you Marianne Marlow.

She had a little out of cage time today, but I am not sure she enjoyed being so low down. I'll think about getting her a friend. Penny looks so comfy on that platform. Munchy likes a platform these days. Mine have given mange tout or sugarsnap the occasional nibble but no other interest. They really vary how much they go for their veggies. Been smashing strawberries lately. If she can have safe floor time out of cage then that's great. As for getting her a flightless friend, I would personally suggest waiting until she's finished quarantine and see how she reacts to the others. Although that would mean a month of her waiting for a friend's quarantine to finish if she's really eager for a friend. I tried her with carrot again yesterday and she just wouldn't even go near it. Yes, Blithe and George are the older buds, they are 8 years 9 months (George) and 7 years 5 months (Blithe). Blithe has never showed any real interest in hens so he might be a good candidate - George has had many girlfriends and I don't want to encourage hanky panky, so perhaps not him! I peg the sugar snap peas whole inside the cage and they love nibbling at them. Henry especially loves them! They wait next to the clips every morning, knowing the routine far too well. I also sometimes add them to the kabob. I try and vary the veg I peg up every day and I make a chop that lasts a few days, which I keep in the fridge; I mix red pepper, apple, carrot, cucumber, sprouted beans, spinach, kale…the usual favourites. Do you think Penny would pick out the bits she liked from a little chop of some grated and tiny pieces? You could sprinkle with red millet to encourage her? You could literally peg sugar snaps to anything really. Penny might be enjoying some peace and quiet as she was obviously bred a lot previously, plus do you think your older buds who need a bit of a hand up (is that Blithe and George? - trying to remember without checking the post where you mentioned them) would enjoy keeping her company after quarantine?

Yes, but when I try new things they are all scared of them I think varying the veg is the way to go. I can't see any damage, maybe she has just never flown what a shame.. maybe her wings are damaged somehow. did she enjoy being out? She does seem to want to fly, but just can't. She's laying on her lower shelf singing, so must be content at least. Aww, bless her. It’s like she’s trying to. Ah, yes Fortunately mine no longer spook at anything new, but they won't try it for ages. I have to put it in daily until they start eating it. And after that if I put it in too much the novelty seems to wear off. :/ They sure are awkward. At least I know they're not eating too much seed, but I do wish they were more enthusiastic about their fresh food. They're the only reason I even buy most of it. Yes, but when I try new things they are all scared of them

Hearing her singing must be lovely. She must be happy with you. Perhaps Blithe will befriend her. Not sure how easy it’d be to find a fellow flightless budgie though.

Poor little darling; she looks like she doesn’t quite know what to do - perhaps instinct is telling her one thing but the body just can’t deliver. I wonder if some sustained exercise times out on a bed might help strengthen her. It may not; it may be too late for that, but worth giving her the opportunity to try.

I agree, she doesn't like being low down and so is trying to lift off to fly but can't. She really does remind me of JoJo as she was exactly the same when I let her out on the floor, same motions, short stumpy legs, missing tail feathers and everything. JoJo used to waddle along, but she was much more vocal and angry and to my knowledge never had any chicks. JoJo was found outside walking along the road (before she came to the previous owner before me) and I'll never know how she escaped as she could not fly. I did try putting JoJo on a stick, near the floor, and moving it up and down slowly to see if she flapped but she just flapped and fell off repeatedly. Penny did the same. Penny does seem to be a sweet little girl. She was trying so hard to fly! I wonder if she injured herself in a small way that doesn't show but won't allow her fly. Something like a torn tendon that didn't heal properly? She does have a good home now with you to love her and see that she gets proper nutrition.

Is her balance okay, Marianne Marlow? You may have mentioned, but I’m getting old. . Don’t remember. . Will she be able to hang around with the others and be able to climb about on ropes and ladders?

I think her balance is okay. But the others are up high all the time, so if she fell she would really hurt herself, I don't think I am willing to take that risk. If she was able to glide to the floor it would be a different thing, but I don't feel she would even be able to do that. I have seen her fall from perches in her cage when startled and she plummets to the floor and sometimes ends up on her back. Luckily I have two towels under the newspaper at the bottom of the cage, so she is safe. Is her balance okay, Marianne Marlow? You may have mentioned, but I’m getting old. . Don’t remember. . Will she be able to hang around with the others and be able to climb about on ropes and ladders?
