tweetiepiesmom - That’s just my best guess based on the current photo, and I think baby budgie ceres tend to be more “hit or miss” than once they grow up a bit. I could still be wrong of course! Marianne Marlow - Was Snowy pied, by any chance? I was also considering that Finlay isn’t pied as far as I can see, so I didn’t think he’d have an odd colored cere by this age.

That explain’s why Snowy had a cere that didn’t turn dark blue for a while. Pied can also affect the cere color, and some male budgies will even keep a half dark pink and half dark blue cere for the rest of their lives!

I thought that was recessive pied though? That explain’s why Snowy had a cere that didn’t turn dark blue for a while. Pied can also affect the cere color, and some male budgies will even keep a half dark pink and half dark blue cere for the rest of their lives!

Marianne Marlow - Any pied can do that. My Xephy is dominant pied and his cere was half pink/purple and lighting blue for a long time. It only turned normal dark blue just after his first birthday.

Morgan and Marianne Marlow that is really interesting! I didn't know cere colour changes could be influenced by genetics as well. It's all so confusing. Finlay is a normal grey as far as I know. Personality wise Finlay tells the other two off a lot. They can offend for all sorts of things, such as sitting quietly minding their own business which seems rather henny. That said I yesterday saw Finlay jump on the swing and get all excited head bashing the beads on it for a short while while chatting away. I don't see a lot of that type of thing though, but then I'd put that down to the way they change how they play as they grow up. So I'm still on the fence! Barney and Finlay seem very chummy at the moment. Fair bit of preening going on and Finlay will sit and shout for Barney to come back if he comes over to see me. Finlay is pretty much 8 months old right now so still a bit of wait and see time I guess. I'm just impatient 😂. I'm also not sure I could get used to not refering to them all as 'the boys'!

My Xephy is dominant pied and his cere was half pink/purple and lighting blue for a long time. It only turned normal dark blue just after his first birthday. Recessive pieds keep a pink cere, but the pied gene mutations in general /can/ affect cere color, but not always! I would say it’s probably a bit on the rare side, I’ve only read about it a few places, and of course my own budgie was a great example for me. In other species of parrots the pied mutation works in mysterious ways too! There’s a lot of overlap in parrots of the types of mutations that are commonly occurring. Like opaline in budgies is essentially the same mutation at the same locus in the chromosome as pearl is for cockatiels, and both are sex-linked. Both mutations cause a lack of melanin pigment in specific areas of the body and wing feathers! As far as my understanding goes so far. It’s super interesting!

I'm also not sure I could get used to not refering to them all as 'the boys'! You don’t have to! Maybe “she’s” a tomboy! Haha! My hen Monkey will also sing quite a lot and head bob at the cage bars or at a toy like the boys do. The other two hens not so much. They are all very unique!

Finlay has rubbed off the little bit of brown that was developing in the centre of his cere. I'm back on the boy side of the fence.

See... to me that still looks a little henny. But I've only ever seen hens with pale tan ceres rather than pale blue.
