The ready-to-eat meals are popular with travellers in Aus whether driving cross country or trekkers doing lengthy walks. I understand they were originally designed for the armed forces to carry in their kits, were then taken up by modern-day explorers particularly through places such as deserts and Arctica, Antarctica and have become more affordable and accessible as the demand has grown. They are great for camping trips if trying to travel light. No odd hobbies in this camp, though maybe some odd habits …

That's interesting loz I bet Chocobo would like a mini bike, so she could ride around on those tracks too She strikes me as a bit of a dare devil.

Marianne Marlow, I have kept Chocobo out of the garage for this very reason. Once you've been bitten by the biking bug, you have it forever!

A year ago, I might have said keeping budgies/parrots is an odd hobby.
It now seems more like a necessity!

This is an interesting thread. I don’t think I have any weird hobbies. I craft & I have crafted some possibly weird things (knitted beards, blue tits, budgies etc). I also like doing Postcrossing when I can which is a worldwide postcard swap although postage has gone up massively which is a pain. I just received my 100th postcard though after several years! www.postcrossing.com/about

The postcard swap sounds great. I used to have about 50 penpals all over the world when I was a teenager.. How my parents afforded the postage I have no idea!! This is an interesting thread. Because I can’t use the phone/ FaceTime etc much of my friendships are maintained through snail mail still. It’s always great getting happy post! And postcards are just brilliant, there’s so much variety nowadays.

I had penpals too Marianne Marlow. I taught myself Italian and had two in different parts of Italy and another in Dorset. I also wrote as a forces penpal for a few years. My penpal in Dorset and I wrote huge big fat letters but back then postage wasn’t determined on weight and size like it is now, so I’d slap on a second class and she’d get it in 2 days and vice versa. I can’t believe how expensive stamps are now! Over 30 years later we’re still in contact, though letters have been replaced by long emails! We were lucky to meet a few times and she and her husband (then boyfriend) even came to my wedding. We’ve been through all sorts together from early crushes, early 90’s tv programmes and music, exams, university, marriage, pregnancy and childbirth (6 children between us), parenting, house moves, family stress, difficult families, swapping recipes, discussing teenagers and now menopause! 😂 She and her family spent 5 years in Kuwait and are now living in Dubai. So there’s still plenty for us to tell one another.

I don't keep in touch with any of mine now, I can't even remember their names. I had some in Australia, South Africa, Finland, Wales, Ireland and even a couple in Prison!! Who lets their 15 year old write to prisoners? It's so odd! I do keep in contact with a lady by email that found me online in 1999 because we had the same name! She's a FB friend now and we have been in touch quite a long time.

I contemplated writing to prisoners too, but then I think I met my husband and didn’t have so much time. I bet that was quite interesting! That’s nice that you and your namesake are online friends. I like it when people pop up like that. My first school friend I made at primary school contacted me on Friends Reunited (before the days of social media) a long time ago. We have remained in contact ever since. She had moved to Dublin and then emigrated to Australia. We email all the time, send gifts and are very close friends even though we live on opposite sides of the world. The magic of the Internet!
