Stupid me set the boyz off very early this morning. I was putting fresh grass in for them as had an early start out the door this morning… all was going well until I bumped the swing that Piper was sleeping on. Of course he panicked, the other two panicked in reply and much commotion resulted. So much for my sneaking in and leaving quietly. I had to then retreat shamefully without checking that they were all settled down again - me sticking my hand in again and “ trying” to help was only going to make things worse.

Oh no! I’m sure they soon settled but how frustrating. Hope you get home to find they have gobbled up all the grass.

There's no calming my buds if they had a fright, I just leave them to it. Although in some circumstances, one of them might land on my head, the acknowledged "safe space" for buds who have been disturbed.

Oh, poor buds, I’m sure they’ve already forgotten.

Everyone who has done this before, raise your hand! I chastise myself afterwards but they do settle down quickly.

Hope they were okay Hezz. It's always bad for the nerves to see them frantically clattering about the cage.

You could kick yourself when something like that happens, I know, I've been there too 😂
Hope all was well.

Yep, I've done this too. Or tried to help and just made things worse. Other than the times when Yuki wouldn't settle again when younger and I'd have to catch and cradle him for a minute to break him out of the cycle. Those were the only times intervening helped.

I’m sure calm was restored more quickly by my absence. A good check over when I did get home again shows no harm done, all buds still in one piece, no missing or broken feathers. I was a bit concerned for Spyro as he had either an injury or neurological problem affecting the backward facing toes on one foot early in the week and has been struggling to perch as he couldn’t get the toes into the proper position. I have been giving him a little physio which may have been helping - getting him to stand on a perch with all toes facing the right way, stepping him off and then back on again. I was worried that he may fall with all three flapping around the cage together, but I am happy to report that this morning I’ve seen him perching properly with seemingly little effort and walking across the top of Mango’s cage normally, not doing his little hoppery-skippery which did actually look quite cute. So, while he isn’t 100% healed, I am relieved to see improvement and am expecting a full recovery. ❤️🩹

I had covered the boys and gone to bed then realised I needed something from the livingroom and not wanting to put the light on I felt around for what I wanted, located it and as I turned to leave the livingroom feeling rather smug with myself I stepped on something that made the smallest of noises. All hell let rip and I spent the next 10 minutes apologising to the boys and settling them down before going back to my bedroom to hide under the cover !

It's weird but my flock rarely reacts to noise. I've tripped over noisy things or dropped them, usually no reaction from the birbs. One exception - if I'm separating Velcro, say I'm taking off foot strapping or similar, the noise triggers a single burble from one of the budgies (I don't know which). It's not alarm, it sounds quizzical. As if the budgie is asking, "What just happened?"

Hezz your birdies really don't like their sleep to be disturbed!

Hezz your birdies really don't like their sleep to be disturbed! Blame Piper. 😁 Usually I hear nothing from them once they settle down, and they were fine with me being there as I went about adding their fresh grass. It was the bump of the swing that put chaos into motion, and once one goes, they all go. In his defence, it was very dark - we don’t have any street lights or neighbours etc, plus they have the blinds down so Loki doesn’t start up at sparrow’s in the morning.

Jeez, Hezz, no street lights, and no neighbours, you must be quite remote. I'll bet the night sky where you are is amazing 🪐🌠🌌

Well, we do have neighbours but we also have lots of trees so no light pollution. Noise on the other hand … The trees do limit our night sky viewing to some degree. A full moon is a welcome friend for my early rising.
