Can anyone tell whether this is a male or female budgie? It is my partners Grandad’s bird, unfortunately he is having to go into a care home and we are planning to have his budgie for him. It doesn’t matter too much what the sex is but his Grandad had been saying it’s a girl? The other advice I was looking for is it does worry me a little as he has always smoked around her (obviously not something I would ever do with Sol or any of my birds!), obviously I’m assuming this increases the risks of her having health problems but should I be worried about her passing anything on to my Sol? That’s my biggest concern really as I would hate for him to become ill from her or anything. We will be doing an isolation period but how will i know for sure she doesn’t have anything transmissible she could give Sol? I guess I’m being a little overprotective over him!  I know he would LOVE a new budgie, but this one doesn’t even leave her cage and is very timid so I hope Sol won’t be too much for her (they will still have their own cages, at least to start with). Any advice is welcomed I hope you’re all doing okay too, I haven’t been on in so long! Becca xx |

The smoking might cause her (I'll leave it to more experienced people to tell if you have a girl or boy) to have a shorter life. Depends on how long she was exposed to the smoke. Do you know how old she is? Being around smoke shouldn't cause her to have an illness that she would pass on to Sol. Keep an eye on her for signs of tail bobbing and respiratory problems, anything else that might look troublesome. Any illnesses should show up in 30 days. So good of you to take her in and I hope she and Sol become friends.

Not sure about gender, but if pushed I'd say a little Hen.
How long has your partners Grandad had the bird?
When you do the 4 week isolation keep a close eye on her for any respiratory signs.
I would be inclined to give her a few steam sessions in the shower while in isolation.
If she is a little shy bird who never ventures out the cage, Sol might be just the company she needs.
See what others think re the steam, I think it would help to clean and clear her airways if she has been in a smokey environment.
Hope you and Sol are both well, look forward to hearing more about this little one, does she have a name?

Thanks both tweetiepiesmom and jellybeanShe’s been exposed to smoke all of her life (literally smoke next to her….) we think she’s around 5 ish years old. She has also been kept in the kitchen/diner so obviously has been exposed to other things too (and air fresheners  ). The other thing is she has been keeping her left eye shut, apparently it started a couple of months ago. We don’t get to see her often as we don’t live near them but my partner and I both looked at her bad eye (that she keeps shut a lot) and it looked like a line across the eye. I don’t know what that is. I’m already worrying about her and I don’t even have her in my care yet! Any idea what that could be? :/ Think I may have to keep Sol at my parents for a month then just in case. Not ideal but better to be safe than sorry. Sol is doing extremely well too, despite losing Sky he has really come out and loves spending time with us. He’s started making new noises which sounds like a person stepping on pebbles… don’t ask me where he got that from!  Oh and the other budgie is called Mollie (I still find it funny how it rhymes with Solly!). But I’d likely change her name if I’m honest not sure what to though just yet! |

To me looks like a boy. Recessive pied, spangle? IraIf the budgie has been exposed to smoking it wont be anything that can be passed on as it's not contagious to have things like lung cancer. Obviously quarantine will make sure there are not "other" issues that can be passed on. |

The eye could have a scratched or torn retina? just a guess. Best to get medical help for that as it might get infected or be painful.

A trip to an Avian vet might be a good idea Becca, give her a good check over and put your mind at rest, and they can check her eye too.
It's a shame that animals, not just budgies,are subjected to cigarette smoke in homes and have nowhere to go to escape.
I'm sure she will have a great life with you and Sol, Becca.

If you have concerns a trip to the avian vet during quarantine for a new bird exam is definitely the way to go, just to rule out anything obvious or that's been hiding. But the smoking shouldn't have caused anything contagious. |

Looks male to me, and recessive pied spangle, with a dark factor or two. mintysowner, the smoking is not going to give him anything contagious but it may make him more susceptible to other diseases, especially respiratory ones. A vet check before the two are introduced may give you peace of mind, and jellybean’s suggestion of some saunas in the first few weeks could help clean the gunk out,of his system. He will be a lucky boy to be able to live with you and Sol. |

Hi again everyone. Today we are taking my partner’s Grandad’s budgie back with us from Birmingham to Dorset! Sadly Grandad passed away a week ago I’m happy to give the budgie a home - Sol is staying at my parents too so it’ll give him time to settle in. I just wanted to run this by the forum though, I think he’s at the end of a hard moult so his feathers are a bit scruffy looking - but this isn’t French moult is it? I don’t know anything about FM so hopefully I’m wrong and just being over cautious! Sol is going to go crazy when he see’s his new bird friend I hope they will get on. Hope everyone is keeping well too x |

So in the video is my partner’s Grandad’s budgie who is called ‘Molly’ but I think she is actually a he. She (he lol) has been around smoke all of her life and lived in the kitchen area so… I don’t think she is maybe in the best of health. We’ve not long got in with her she’s just done a 2 hour 45 minute journey in the car so I have been worrying about her. I know it’ll take a while for her to settle as she’s not been moved for years so I’m surprised she’s made it this far considering. I’m hoping once she meets my Sol (who’s at my parents at the moment!), she will feel a bit happier. I would like to change her cage and the things in it as they’re not what I’d have due to ‘budgie health and safety’! But I don’t want to stress her any further at the moment so thought I’d leave her be for now. I am hoping we can give her a happy (and smoke free!) home xx |

It might be worth contacting a vet, giving them the run-down on his previous life and ask if they have any suggestion on how to best detox him. The heavy moult won’t be helping him at all either. |

I think I would definitely toss everything in Molly's cage because it all probably is infused with cigarette smoke which you don't want Molly to continue to chew on and definitely don't want Sol to chew on.
Sorry to hear about your partner's grandad. Hopefully Molly settles well in your home and becomes best pals with Sol. Will you give Molly a different name? Best of luck to you.

Impossible to tell whether it's French Moult from that video. We'd need to see the wing feathers and back of the budgie.
His feathers do not look good quality, poor sausage.
