It was worth the wait, even if it took 7 years for Dexter to bond with you

Dexter asked me to tell you that he was a good boy at the vets this afternoon.
The vet was as lovely with him as usual. We had a long talk about blood sampling and the risks and how he would take the sample, and he asked if it was ok for him to do bring his equipment to the consulting room rather than taking Dexter out back, as a pbfd precaution. He did warn as that Dexter would protest, and sure enough he started screeching as soon as the vet touched him, which was hard to listen to. It was interesting watching the exam. He weighed him and looked at his wings and feet and then popped him back in the carrier to calm down, still screeching. Then he picked him up and listened to his heart and felt his chest and abdomen and took the blood sample. I couldn't watch that part. I held my breath and dreaded that the screeching would stop but Dexter made it through fine and carried on screeching when back in the carrier. He didn't calm down when I covered the carrier, but after I'd talked to him with lots of kiss noises he stopped screeching.
We've been home for about an hour now. He screeched when David picked him up out of the carrier but we didn't want to let him fly out in case he was feeling a bit weak. He just came out to sit with me and he smells like he's been to the dentist. Now he's taking a nap sitting on the flapped open cage door. I guess he doesn't want to risk napping in the cage in case we catch him again.

What a good boy Dexter is, despite the screeching.
I hope the blood test results are normal.
Sounds like you have a great vet.

Well he definitely deserves his nap after that.
Plus your vet sounds great
Good boy Dexter.

Well done Dexter, you were remarkably brave. You too, Criswell.

They really hate being 'man handled' don't they? Good boy for enduring it somewhat. I recall the vet saying budgies regenerate their blood very quickly, so no worries about the blood loss.

Thanks everyone. Dexter recovered quicker than me I think. I think my nerves are just about back to normal now. I remembered what you said about blood regeneration tweetiepiesmom and mentioned it to the vet and he said they regererate blood super fast - half their volume of blood in a day or two. The vet really is very good and I feel very lucky to have him.

I think Dexter has forgotten all about the vets now, which is great.
We remembered to make the room dark before catching him and there was no fuss at all, and no chasing around the cage. It was like magic!
I've never heard a budgie screech like Dexter today. It was constant short screeches without pausing - like a car alarm. Randolph Carter liked a good screech but never like that.

ffiscool I've often wondered that when one of my lot won't shut up. They must have a stout larynx/equivalent

I know the noise you mean! Monty used to do this while making bite gestures when we grabbed him for meds or weighing.
