Berek & Loric's introduction today has gone well, I think, but I need to work out what has happened here. I haven't seen what lead up to it nor have I heard anything more than the usual squabble & complaint noises. If it's an injury, I would have expected to have heard a lot more distress calling. Nor have I seen any real indication that Maddy is wary of flock interaction subsequent to whatever this is: Maddy is flying normally and is currently preening, unconcerned, not far from Chocobo. The only birb I haven't seen her interact with since this is Squeak so I cannot be certain whether this was a hen squabble or something unrelated to the other birbs.

After some searching, I located the missing feather. It was on the floor behind the forage gym. There's no way I could have missed a fight going on there, it's two-feet away from my face when I'm in my armchair.

Poor little Maddy! Looking at the first two pictures, I thought it might be an injury because she looked like she was holding her foot weird but in the other pictures she's holding the foot normally. It might be a blood feather that broke off. I'd keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get infected. More experienced folks will have better thoughts for you.

Maddy's footsies are fine, it's just an awkward perch for budgets. The blood looked terrible and I was initially gravely concerned. Now I'm just hoping the stub comes out OK and there is no infection. I wonder how she broke it? She's a good flier but not the most accomplished of landers, I have to say.

Hmm. Why knows how the feather broke, but it obviously was not meant to come out yet if it was still full of blood.
Hopefully the pointy bit will fall out in a few days. Keep an eye on her.
Do you have cornflour just in case you have to grab her and apply?

I've got ground cayenne pepper which I read was a suitable substitute for corn flour. Hopefully this is correct?
I always try to keep an eye out for Maddy so this will not be difficult.

I thought the cayenne was for feeding to them for the pain Hezz would know.

I thought the cayenne was for feeding to them for the pain Hezz would know. I was told to have it on hand if I want to try clipping toenails. Unless I am completely misremembering but if I am, why is there cayenne in my cupboard?

I dunno. You might have remembered correctly. Perhaps I bunked off from that school lesson. I thought the cayenne was for feeding to them for the pain Hezz would know. I was told to have it on hand if I want to try clipping toenails. Unless I am completely misremembering but if I am, why is there cayenne in my cupboard?

Munchy's flight feathers used to break like this, just randomly. The first time he lost one on each wing and bled down both flanks, which prompted him to pluck all of those feathers out. After that I got good at spotting a slipped feather that meant a break and catching him to apply cornflour.
Maddy might have just bumped something, cracked the feather, and then bitten through it because it was annoying her.

Hezz, can you please tell us of the uses of cayenne?

Maddy continues to show no signs of distress. The left wing still looks a bit messy with the blood stains - she's just now tried to have a bath but she only chooses those times when Chocobo is already occupying it. You can imagine how that went.

Oh dear, two hens = chaos I expect Squeak knows better than to interrupt Chocobo at bathtime

Squeak & Chocobo have a truce, which both sides adhere to 95% of the time.

That's like bathtime here. One going for it encourages the others but then they all squabble for it.
