The other day my friend watched as I fed our budgies some fresh veg and asked me "are budgies vegetarian?"...to be honest I couldn't give her an answer. I would have thought in the wild, budgies would probably pick at bugs as well as seeds, fruit and veg etc. Does any one know for sure if budgies are vegetarians or would they eat bugs etc given half the chance....and if so would supplementing their diet with say live or freeze dried meal worms or other bugs be good for them? Thanks x

Hi yes they will eat flesh given the opportunity. Anyone who breeds or keeps birds can vouch for that. It can be dead aviary mates or chicks in a nest. It's a great source of protein. Yours B.J.

I think Barrie left Caps on by mistake H20, he does that sometimes. It can be a trial to delete your whole sentence and start again when you're in a hurry

Rest assured that Barrie will be the last person to attack someone for asking a question regarding budgies. His life revolves around promoting the hobby and advising people about it. Here is his website full of advise.

I have to agree with the other members - Barrie isn't yelling at you. He wouldn't do that, he is too nice. In fact we are all here to try to help.
PP, I can imagine the look!
So while budgies will eat chicken (cannibals!), I didn't know they would go for any other meat, Corie. That's interesting.
Anyone else feed their budgies any other meat???

I've tried chicken and chicken eggs. Technically they're only cannibals if they eat other budgies, Hezz ;P

Now we are getting pedantic! It was a joke, of course! And .....they do eat other budgies, so yes they are cannibals. Or would you rather that they be called carrion eaters .......... In fact they are both as they will kill and then eat, and will eat what others have killed ......

Apologies to Mr Barry if I took your post the wrong way Thanks everyone for all your help. Has anyone ever tried freeze dried meal worms on their Budgies...we feed them to the Robins in the garden and they love them How often should meat products be fed to Budgies please?
