I don't agree with Bird Junky about the calcium. She definitely needs it and I am glad you have ordered some.

I mean I've looked about this forum and I'm actually quite ashamed after seeing all these spoiled birds. She always has people about she's in the main room, stacks of toys , treat sticks etc. By basic care I mean her needs are met but there are certainly things we could improve on.
I guess the main thing is she doesn't get out, if you put your finger though the bars she'll bite you and on occasions she has been known to cling onto your hand I'm not lying when I say it hurts which is why we stopped trying to get her used to our hands which I know was a bad idea.

The main thing is you are trying to do something now, so no point beating yourself up over what has passed. With what you have said about how you interact with each other, I doubt you would make much inroads with her behaviour. Taming an untamed older budgie takes a lot of time and commitment. I think you need to work on gaining her trust first and formost. If there is a particular treat she loves use this to work towards some mutual trust. Try feeding her through the bars of the cage firstly, talking quietly and blinking at her. You really are going to go right back to the most basic steps. It will take a lot of patience and persistance to break a life-time's worth of habits. Most birds don't like having their personal space intruded on - that is you putting your fingers through the bars. Even my tame birds don't like me doing that, especially my hen! She loves to get a good nip in, it took me 12 months of constant reinforcement that biting wasn't acceptable, before I was confident she would sit on my shoulder without resorting to a nip on the ear. But we got there. She may well try to get a nip in on someone else, but we are now in a good place.

Thank You Hezz -I'm going to try with some treats though the bars first and foremost.
Barrie - I read your calcium link very informative that's how I found out about Calcivet. After reading the above link it seems my budgie is on the worse diet possible. She is fed basic seed, and gets treat sticks and millet I think I have alot of learning to do.

If you want to try her with some vegetables or herbs then I recommend Basil as a starter. Clip some leaves to the side of her cage, clip millet next to it to get her over to it and eventually she'll have a taste.

Thank you, just the advice I needed is there any all time favourite treat I can try for my feeding through the bars. She will come right over to erm see you but it's not to be nice. If you touch the bars she opens her beak and threatens you, fairly certain she'll follow though. However she does listen to you talking to her.

I think that she's being territorial as the cage is her domain.

I think that she's being territorial as the cage is her domain. Is there anything I can do about that, perhaps I'm better approaching from the cage door but keeping my hand out her space?

Might be worth making a post in the "taming" section about that, then more people will see it and you'll get more response.
