Hi It will need beside budgie seed mix. An Iodine block
& a varied mix of fruit & veg & a little hard boiled egg
about once a week. Toys are your choice Not too many
so the cage isn't cluttered. Have a good read of the
posts on care & training. Be gentle he's only a baby.
Yours B.J.

Hi Rob, welcome to the forum It will take a while for your new budgie to settle in, its very scary for a tiny budgie to be taken to a new place with a giant person who he doesn't know Sounds like you are doing the right things so far. Get down to his eye level, talk softly to him and blink at him a lot, he should eventually start blinking back. As for cage essentials you need natural perches, none of those nasty plastic ones that come with new cages so often. You can make these perches out of many different tree branches, make sure it is a non toxic tree though, I will find a safe wood list for you in a moment. You can also buy them online or from a really good pet shop, why not check out the affiliates section at the bottom of the main forum page for some online shops you can check out. Rope perches are good for their feet too Also a good variety of toys although don't give him anything with mirrors on as it can affect you bonding and taming him/ her. A good diet for budgies is a good seed mix, iodine block, cuttlefish, plus there are lots of veggies you should try him while as while he is young he is more likely to eat them. The favourites with my budgies are carrot, sweetcorn, cucumber, brocolli, cress, and celery. Also make sure you don't use those sandpaper sheets or sandpaper perch covers that all the pet shops sell. If you have natural perches their nails should be kept short, newspaper is best for the bottom of the cage. Why not post a photo of your little one here Then we can tell you if its a male or female and you can get thinking on a name

Uploaded with ImageShack.usthanks Rachel! i have sand paper in the bottom but it's covered with a grill is that going to be ok? this was taken after he\she decided to dive down into the seed and climb back up. It had a bit of a stressfull day yesterday though....i had to clean it's feet as it had all poo and sand balled up onto it's claws (from the pet shop) and had problems climbing and moving around... poor bugger then it decided to escape as i was putting it back in and decided to attempt to fly (cant fly well yet and no clipped wings) and crash everywhere someone needs to invent a budgie crash helmet

If the sandpaper is below the grill, it is fine. It should not touch the budgie feet. In that case you don't need sandpapers. Old newspaper would do the same.

also is this something to worry about, my little budgo when she jumps for a perch 70% of the time she'll miss and land on the floor of the cage....or is just because she's young?

Yes it's because it has just weaned. Place the perch on lower level.

BB is right, young budgies can be a little clumsy sometimes, it will take her a while to get used to the layout of the cage. Plus when she has settled in you will be able to let her out of her cage, she will soon get the hang of zooming around the room, just make sure that you budgie proof the room first Have you thought of any names yet for the little girl?

She is gorgeous, Rob. We never think of birds being clumsy but they sure can be as babies.

so it's day 3 in the big budgie house LOL! seriously though it's day 3 and Daisy is still quite shaky when i go near the cage....you guys think it's anything to do with us having to clean her feet of all the poo and gunk from when we got her and then her great escape into the glass door and all around the living room? she came up onto my finger on day one and even grooming my arm...and yesterday she was grinding away.....today she hasn't eaten...well she took a little nibble out of the millet i got in there...other than that she's just been a statue....oh and she took a little tumble in the middle of the night (fell of her perch) glad i moved all the perches lower for her....im probably just being a little too pushy with her....but would like some advice ether way....
thanks!

well i just thought I'd sit next to her and talk with classical music on and put my hand next to her slowly, moving it closer and she seemed to appreciate it...and even let me sit next to the cage while she ate..and she's blinking with me...so im assuming thats progress she's soooo lush! now back on her perch....shaking AND grinding.....sooo confused

I'm a newish budgie owner too...i got heaps of help and understanding from this forum and the people on it...When i brought Elfie home i just sat by his cage for a week -week and halfish just talking to him blinking and of course changing his food and water..As the time went on and he got more used to my voice and the new surroundings i moved on to the next step of just placing my hand on the cage bars and continued talking to him until again he looked comfortable then i placed my hand in the cage,i didn't try and get him on my finger or touch him until i believed he was feeling OK about it...At times i never thought i would get him on my finger let alone letting him out of his cage but with "alot of time and patience" it happened...Recently i had to give him medicine in to his mouth for a whole week and a half which meant catching him, once the week and a half had past i tried to get him to step up but he was a little scared again so i took a step back until finally i got him trusting me again...Your little budgie will get there in the end just remember they are all different and if you move things on slowly and don't rush her you will 100% get there,i did and believe me i never thought i would and i certainly didn't think i would be able to give advice on it ha ha
