Well he is still here and seems to be alot more alert today. He has been quite chirpy still quite protective over the toy he loves and still affectionate towards me and has said the odd word. I managed to coax him into eating seeds out of my hand and he seemed to eat quite a reasonable amount. I'm not sure if he just dehusked some and didn't eat them (the bigger seeds) but I'm sure he ate some at least. His poo has improved in the sense that it isn't just all watery like before and there is some form to it again but he still has undigested seeds in these new poo that he has done today. He is due to see the vet later today it is the family friend so not an avian vet but they are shut today anyway. I think Merlin gets annoyed when I talk about him dying as he does loud chirps as if to say "Oi you! Don't talk about me like that I'm still alive!" I love his little spirit I hope I have more time with him but I am seriously worried. It gaves you brief hope when he seems to improve but I know it doesn't really mean anything as they can hide illness. At least he ate something. I think what he has managed to keep in him is helping keep his energy up still. How much does a budgie need to eat a day to survive?

The video is from today a big improvement from how he over the weekend but he still clearly isn't well he is at the vets now. My partners parents have taken him for me. The undigested seed in the poo really concerns me. When he was covered up to go he said "Goodnight budgie boy" got to love his character. I hate him being at the vets I have butterflies in my stomach wondering if he will return when he goes to see them.
Oh in the video I was testing his reaction to his toy that he loves to see if he was alert enough to respond as he gets annoyed when you go near it. I know when he is at his worst he doesn't even flinch if you touch it. The poos at the bottom of the cage are from today and more solid but have undigested seeds in them.

Vet thought he might of had some viral infection she has given us baytril to put in the water for 10 days and said to give him guardian angel after that has finished. She said plan B if that doesn't work to give him "spot on" on the back of his neck and if he is still not recovered she mentioned some vitamin drops children normally have begins with A can't remember the name but I have it written down. I don't think she 100% knew what was up with him and I'm not totally convinced as she apparently did not want to handle him so only saw him in his cage which surprises me. At least we have something to try and treat him with now. It is very expensive at the vets and that was with a discount but at least I know I've tried to do something.

I agree that the vet was having some guesswork. On the positive note, it's good to know that he is feeling better.

I do hope Merlin improves for you, but this has been ongoing, hasn't it? You mentioned he gets ill everytime he is moulting, I wonder if it would be worth trying to predict when this would happen and boosting his immunity BEFORE he goes down-hill? I am afraid you are correct with the vet guessing what is the problem, and I would be chasing up more info/diagnosis on what Barrie mentioned - AGY. A little research does seem to see it following Merlin's symptoms. With the right tests, it would appear fairly easy to diagnose. The Merck Manual is very well regarded by doctors; I imagine the vet's version would be just as highly regarded: www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/170212.htm

I am thinking it looks like it could be AGY from everything I've looked up but then sometimes it looks like it could be other things as alot of the symptoms cross over. It is so frustrating because I want to do something and I feel like my options are limited. From what I am gathering about AGY it seems there is no real cure and the only things that may help is Amphotericin B but I don't know where to get this from. I have read elsewhere that garlic can help. If there isn't a cure what can I do to prolong his life as long as possible? I believe they are to avoid sugar. If he does recover I'm wondering what are the best things to do if he has another relapse. The things I have found so far that seem to help have been warmth and tons of attention and spoiling him. I think this helps him as it keeps his spirits up and I think thats half the reason I managed to convince him to eat after not eating for over 24 hours.

Merlin today seems to be quite alert. He is chirping and responding to me whistling to him. He has eaten a little bit. He has drank. He still gets annoyed if you do a fake cough (flaps his wings in anger not really sure why it annoys him but it has been a quirk of his for a long time) and he gets annoyed if you touch his ball toy which he is quite possesive over. What is most concerning me today are his poos. They are full of seed and earlier were just watery green with seeds. I will post some photos to show how he looks today and his droppings.

Seeds in poo from today Posture in cage today playing with his toy ball Closeup of his face Just a few photos to show his general condition. I don't know if it can help to say what might be wrong or not. To me it also looks like his cere has changed I still don't know if Merlin is really a she. The vets seem to think he is a she. His beak also looks abit flaky. Lately he has just looked more scruffy but I don't know if that is due to moulting and illness. Only feed him trill or used to give trill toppers. He didn't have cheap seed and couldn't convert him to like veg or fruit he would sometimes shred a carrot but usually he just freaked out at something new being in his cage and wouldn't touch it same when I tried egg.

By looking at the droppings, it appears that Barrie was right when he said that he has a digestive problem coupled with thricho or megabacteria.

Is there anything at all I can do if those are his problems?
Has anyone ever had a budgie that has managed to recover when his droppings have gone to this stage?
