Im going on holiday for two weeks at the end of June, and I am worried about leaving my budgie, my plan is to take him to my neighbours house, so he has some company for most of the day, instead of someone just popping in once a day to change the food and water. Do you think that's the best thing to do??

Hiya I know how you feel as i am away in june also and Elfie being my first ever budgie i was really worried about being away and him missing me,i will be taking him to my mums to look after and leaving her with a list of instructions ie not to use sprays or teflon not to let him out of the cage ect ect ect ect also i will leave the vets number with her just in case ...I feel a lot better knowing that he will have a little company when i am away and someone to keep an eye on him so for you to leave your little one with your neighbours i think is a great idea

I would only leave it with the neighbors if I am sure that he would be looked after and safe. And there are no other pets or kids.

I suppose it depends on whether your holiday is home or abroad though BJ not that easy to take your pets on a plane plus i think advice was just wanted on were to leave his budgie... BB i agree as long as its safe with neighbors then all should be OK ;D

When i go away my two go on there hollidays to my friends. Ada gets excited when her holliday cage comes out. Ive explaned to her how to look after them and they stay in her computer room as she spends a lot of time in there and she has a cat and 2 dogs so they door stays closed and they dont come out of the cage. Normaly when i go away its to my brothers and they have 4 cats, 3 of wich are bird hunters so they cant come. Ada is allways happy to see me when i come back and calls like mad, but eagle will compleatly ignor me lol.
The only problem i have is the birds drops and meds, my friend is an older lady and has a lot of trouble giving her dogs any meds so i dont trust her to give them to my birds so ada had to miss 1 dose of her painkilers and eagle doesnt get his suplements in his water. but its only the 1 night the dont get it, if i go away for longer i dont know what ill do.

If you trust your neighbour to look after your bird, trust they will do the right thing. Better for him to have company than just the odd visit. Make sure the neighbour is up on blowing husks and changing water daily etc - the things we take for granted but others may not be aware of. Who knows, you may have a budgie convert by the time you get back. I think you are doing the right thing.

I like the idea of "budgie convert" Hezz. I think everyone of us should leave our birds with neighbors for a few days to convert them ;D

I must admit that we wont go on holiday while we have the budgies. I don't think there is anyone I would trust with them!
I have spent 5 nights away from them when I was in hospital (due to allergies to them!) but my husband looked after them so that is fine.
As others said, I wouldn't house them with anyone that already has pets. I'd also leave a list of what they need to do and when they need to do it.

I don't know what to do with my bird if I ever go on holiday. I left him with someone once when I had to go back to NZ for my mother-in-law's funeral last year. It was just for three days, but when I got back his fresh food was just a putrid pile. Those days I was away we had a 45C heat wave in Sydney. Even still, I was devastated. I'd prepared everything so perfectly and methodically for each day I was away, sorting each day's food into labelled daily containers in the fridge with a really simple instruction sheet.
What can I say.

I have the same problem...off to Scotland for a week, touring around, staying in different places - no chance of taking them with us. The person who used to look after my previous budgie now has a large dog, dammit! So I've asked various people and now am entrusting them to a lovely couple who have never had budgies, but who are very responsible...am about to compile a list of instructions - wish me luck!
